The First Fire of the Season

I’m one of those who want comfort first. I don’t play that game of “let’s see how long we can go before we turn on the furnace.” Why? Because, I know what I want. That being said, Mr. FixIt and I have two entirely different thermostats. If it is June and it’s 70 degrees in the house…Mr. FixIt thinks it’s too hot. Gotta turn on the AC! However, if it’s October and it’s 70 degrees in the house, it’s too cold. Gotta turn on the furnace!

My sweetie ran to town yesterday to get a haircut and while he was gone, I cleaned the house and sat down to knit. It was chilly and raining so I decided to get the gas fireplace ready for its winter workout. I’ve watched Mr. FixIt set it up every fall, but I’ve never done it myself. I put fresh batteries in the remote and in the stove itself. It has an electronic ignition and thermostat. I fiddled with it for a minute then I realized the gas was turned off at the wall. Once I turned it on, I got it started right away. It was soon way too hot in the living room so I turned it off, but Mr. FixIt was really impressed when he saw the pilot light lit.

I made a big pot of chili yesterday and a pan of biscuits. My bonus grandson and his family came out for a visit and an early supper. Big Boy is three and Little Boy is eight months old and they are cute as buttons. I was afraid they wouldn’t know us because it’s been quite a while since we’ve seen them, but those little guys just snuggled right in to us and it warmed our hearts. Their mama wants to learn how to make biscuits next time she’s out. She’s going to need to know how with a house full of men to feed!

I defrosted a peach cobbler I made in late summer, but the kids were gone and there it sat on the counter. We each had a small piece with our tea and called it a day. I didn’t have little boys. I don’t know the first thing about interacting with them or what they like other than food and trucks. So food and trucks it is! They do wear me out, though. So much noise in our quiet little life.

God knew what he was doing when he gave me girls. I can play tea party and dress up with the best of them. But I also taught them how to do things that were not typically associated with young ladies at the time. I thought it was important for them to have a broad knowledge base and I think it has benefited them immensely.

Our eldest “Great Grand-Little” turned five years old this past week so we are going to a birthday party today at…Skate City! You know how long it’s been since I went to a Skate City??? A good long time, let me tell ya! And no….we are NOT skating!!! I’ll let you know how it goes.

““Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—”
