Thanksgiving is a Verb

Yesterday didn’t go quite as planned. Some of the calls I wanted to make were to places that are bound to be closed until Monday, so I had my list on the desk. Mr. FixIt ordered up scrambled eggs, ham, and toast. Once that was done and the dishes were washed, I started into the office to get after my list. That’s when he asked me if I had called about his ring.

During our first year together, they found something wrong with Mr. FixIt’s blood. They thought maybe he had some kind of leukemia and we started down the road of tests, tests, and more tests. I knew in the back of his mind, he was worried about a lot of things… not the least of which was how new our relationship was. I didn’t want one minute of his energy spent on worrying about whether I’d be there for the long haul.

I went to the mall one afternoon and happened to see a handsome men’s ring on sale. I decided that was the perfect way let him know I wasn’t going anywhere. I bought him the ring, and the night before his bone marrow biopsy, I gave it to him and looked him straight in the eye.

“I’m not going anywhere. You just focus on being well, ok?”

Mr. FixIt was completely taken aback. His heart melted and I think his lower lip quivered a little. He wrapped his arms around me and thanked me profusely.

That ring ended up as his wedding band. It’s two-toned gold with a row of channel-set diamonds. Somewhere along the way, he lost one of the diamonds and we had the ring repaired. I was glad I bought the lifetime warrantee. Well, when we got back from camping at the beach, he looked down and noticed a diamond missing again. This time there was a problem.

I couldn’t find the warranty.

I looked in all the usual places. The lockbox at the bank. Our safe at home. In my jewelry box. Try as I might… I simply could not find it. The jewelry store I bought the ring from is no long in business here so I called their corporate office. I was hoping they could look up the warranty by my phone number or address. But everyone I called had no record of it. When Mr. FixIt asked me yesterday if I’d called on his ring, I knew I was going to have to try a different tactic.

I needed to find that warranty and I needed God’s help.

As I walked down the hallway, I said, “Lord, please help me find those papers! My sweetheart is missing his ring.” I walked into the back bedroom which is really just a repository for boxes of “stuff” and… I’m not kidding. I literally walked straight over to a white laundry basket, picked up the papers on the top, and… there was the warranty!!!

I couldn’t believe it! I broke into a big smile and looked up. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!”

I walked straight to the living room and held the papers up for Mr. FixIt to see.

“You found them???”

“No,” I said. “God did! He just led me to them!”

I called the number on the papers, filed a claim, and in ten minutes I had the shipping label and the order form printed out.

“Ask and ye shall receive.” “Seek and ye shall find.” “Knock and it shall be opened unto you.”

Ask, seek, and knock are action words. You must DO something. The same is turn about thanksgiving. It’s not just a day to eat turkey and watch football. It’s the day to give thank and GIVE is an action word.

I’m giving thanks for many things today. I have a wonderful husband whom I love. I have a wonderful family that I am looking forward to visiting with via Skype today. I have a home with a furnace that’s working. I have good, healthy food to prepare today. I have friends, new and old. I have a God who helps me with the littlest things in life. And, I have you all to share my life with on a daily basis. I am so incredibly grateful for everything in my life.

May you find yourself feeling God’s presence… today and every day. I love you all!

Thank you!!!
