Settling in With a Little Baking

After not feeling well on Christmas Day, I decided to just lay low and eat light yesterday. Toast and tea for breakfast, some more on the computer, and some knitting while Mr. FixIt watched his shows left me feeling refreshed and rested. We had a lovely video chat with my in-loves in Colorado. My son-in-law’s parents are the salt of the earth and we had a grand time visiting with them over tea. In the late afternoon, Mr. FixIt headed to town for a minute. By that time it had started snowing.

Just as he left, I saw a post on the scanner page on FB that warned of an accident on the top of the hill above our house. My sweetie called me from the truck and said it was a bad one but the roads weren’t all that terrible. It must have been caused by something else. Who knows? There are so many deer about at that time of day and people drive like maniacs on that road. Someone got on his tail all the way home and peeled out around him when he turned to check the mail.

Then I learned Christmas Day that my sweet aunt…my mom’s only surviving sister…fell on Christmas Eve and broke her hip. My Auntie Rosie is a gem. She looks so much like my mom and my grandma that it shakes me to my core when I see her. She lost her husband a few years ago and has been living with her daughter. When my cousin lost her husband, the two of them moved back to Indiana to be near friends for support.

Aunt Rosie was in Nursing School when I was born. She stayed at our house a lot to help mom with me and my big brother. I was a handful, I’ve been told. My aunt likes to tell the story of how she discovered I had torn up my mom’s new book and was going to spank my little butt. Instead, Auntie Rosie hid me in the closet till mom cooled down. When her only child was born when I was about five or six, she brought her home on the train so we could meet her. I remember her curly red hair framing her face like an auburn halo and her porcelain skin was just like a little china doll.

My aunt got a new hip for Christmas and they started her on rehab yesterday. I spoke with her for a moment, but her attention span was short so I asked my cousin to keep me up to date. Please send up some prayers for them both to get through this with ease and quick healing.

When Mr. FixIt was in town and called me, he asked if I wanted him to stop at the store to get us a sweet. I told him I had something better in mind. Within an hour, I had a homemade apple pie in the oven. We warmed up the leftover Cheesy Broccoli soup for supper and ate as we watched a light snow dust the sidewalks. This has been a cozy and quiet week here at Marshmallow Ranch and I’ve really enjoyed the down time. I’m about half through the fifth Christmas stocking!

I’ll need to pick up the pace in the next couple of days. There’s a lot to do before the FixIt Family Festivities on Friday. Cleaning house and wrapping presents. And I still need to send our Christmas cards. I might eke out one more knitting day before I have to get busy.

  1. Prayers for Aunt Rosie! One of my sister friends fell about 4 days before Christmas. She fractured 2 ribs and broke the pelvic saddle. So far she’s unable to walk but is in good spirits. She turned 81 on Christmas day. On top of that she tested positive for C19. Barb lives with her sister Pat. Two and a half years ago Pat joined our dreaded club. I’ve moved out of state but we talk every few days and I drive 6 hours to see them and my son and his family. It’s 2:13 a m here in NV and I’m listening to the wind howl while it rains. I never sleep well during winter storms. The winds call too loud.

  2. ***Stay safely snug everyone, nothing is as important as your health. Put off what can be postponed, and stay home, taking no unnecessary chances (ladders, slippery steps etc) Do without, if you have to, till weather has cleared. Call loved ones who might need some company . ♥♥
