Monday is for Making

Monday knitting group was great fun, as always…even though one of our regulars couldn’t be there. One of our gals is just learning how to use her Addi 42 Needle Knitting Machine so I’ve been helping her with some of the finer points of technique. Another is SO excited…she is buying a thirty foot camper for a “She Shed” out behind her house. She’s already planning some knitting get-togethers for the summer and we can’t wait to share in her joy. The third of my compadres is the gal who introduced me to the group and she was busily crocheting bunnies for Easter. We’ll be meeting at her house next week.

I finally finished Sue’s socks and I think they turned out pretty well. They aren’t perfect, but she will love them and I think they’ll fit her well. When I got home from group, Mr. FixIt and I headed into town to pick up a few things. I go through blueberries like crazy and I was almost out. And, I decided I wanted to try a different way of doing the dishes. Our dishwasher has been out of commission for a couple of years now and, honestly…I don’t mind washing by hand. That being said, I am being more conscientious about my water usage. I decided, instead of letting the water run to rinse the dishes, I’d get another dishpan for the second sink and a draining board for under the dish rack. I won’t need to use nearly as much water.

When I wash dishes out at The Farm these days, I really have to be mindful of the water. The pump for the well is currently not working so any water I use, I have to haul it in. I heat up about a half gallon of water in a stockpot and pour it in the dishpan with a very small amount of detergent. Then I heat another half gallon and set it by the sink. I wash the dishes, then the pans, and swish them in the rinse water. Then the dishes dry in the drainer. I can wash all my dishes in less than a gallon of water, then I use the water to wipe down the stove, countertops, and floor. I figured if I could do that at The Farm, there’s no reason I can’t do it here at Marshmallow Ranch.

So, after all that, we had to stop at Lowe’s to get a couple of chainsaw blades. While we were there, Mr. FixIt told me he’d seen there was a 30% off sale on major appliances. We went back and found a simple dishwasher for a steal, so I guess we’ll be getting one. Whether I use it or not is yet to be seen, but it will come in handy for when the whole family is over and we have a LOT of dishes to do.

It seems Mondays are for making…and marketing. It was nice to not have to cook. And the weather was warm enough to camp out in the field! We’re getting to my favorite time of the year!
