Wowza! The Sky is Falling!!!

Man, did we have some crazy weather yesterday. I mean like, Wrath of God thunder and lightning and rain, rain, rain! We even had a tornado warning. I was going through some papers in a box when I heard Mr. FixIt’s phone make some sort of weird noise…just like the one that comes over the television when there’s an activation of the Emergency Broadcast System. I picked up the phone and was met with bright red letters and exclamation points saying there was a tornado warning for my area and we should go to the basement immediately.

I asked Mr. FixIt if he had ever seen that before and he said very, very rarely. We grabbed what we needed and went downstairs and watched the radar on our phones as the thunder was crashing overhead. The rain came down in torrents and we could tell it was overwhelming the gutters, but I’m so happy to say…the drain out back stayed clear and we didn’t get a drop of water inside the basement!

As soon as the coast was clear, we put on our rain boots and went out to survey the damage. We didn’t hear any trees crashing, but when we were down at the big creek out back, there was a huge log flowing downstream. And, the creek flooded out of its banks and up into the field. Mr. FixIt says it doesn’t happen very often and this is the first time I saw it. The road crew came early this spring and graded the gravel road alongside our house so the water would flow away from the yard. Well, we still got standing water in the yard and this time, water flowed down off the road and created its own little creek across the near field. We’re going to have to have them figure something else out because this won’t work. Intermittent thunderstorms were forecast for all of last night. I just got setting in TOW-Wanda to write when the next wave hit. I packed everything up quickly and came back in the house. I really didn’t want to be out there if another severe storm came through.

Now, update on the bathroom…we have a toilet! It’s not hooked up to water yet, but it will be today. We managed to put it in without killing each other. It must be hard for Mr. FixIt. I know just enough about renovations and tools to be dangerous. I think he should do it my way. He says, “I don’t know.” Which, loosely translated means… “I think it’s great you’re helping me and that you’ve done things like this before, but…we’re going to do it this way.” Which is fine. Because…when it’s MY job, I’m going to expect him to do it MY way! Which he does.

T-Minus four days and counting till Daughter #1 arrives with the kids! I made a lot of progress on their room yesterday. Not much left to do and I’ll be kicked back in my summer dress and pearls with a cold ice tea with a plate full of sugar cookies…sitting on the veranda when they arrive. Looking all the world like this hasn’t been a bit of trouble getting ready for company! You know I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat just to see my Colorado Peeps!

The average annual rainfall for New Castle, Colorado (where I used to live) is 15 inches. In a YEAR. Yesterday, we got about 2.25” in around an hour’s time. It’s crazy how wet and humid it is here in West Virginia.

“Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:”

1 Peter 4:8-10 ESV
