Time and Beauty

The high today was only 56° but the sky was crystal blue…not a cloud to be seen until mid-afternoon. It was still breezy which made it feel a lot colder. Our first thoughts were beach time and fishing, but stepping out on the deck convinced us otherwise. Later in the morning, we decided we might go over to the Elizabethan Gardens and walk around, but again…that same windy condition is there, too. So, Mr. FixIt dropped me off at Knitting Addiction and I browsed a little and bought a little and knitted a little till he came back to pick me up.

We thought we’d make an attempt to walk on the beach but once we had lunch, it was nap time. At supper time, we thought we’d go to Henry’s for seafood, but on the way there, we decided neither one of us wanted anything that heavy. We turned around and went up the island to Corolla and bought picnic stuff at Harris-Teeter and ate semi al fresco by the lighthouse.

When we got there, the small parking area was totally empty, but the closer we got to sunset, the more people arrived. Pretty soon, there was close to a hundred people up there with their cameras poised to catch the end of the day. The sunset was pretty, but it wasn’t stellar. I think the first year I came here was the prettiest sunset I’ve ever seen…full of clouds and colors and sunbeams in every direction. There were very few clouds last night so it wasn’t spectacular.

Still and all, it was a beautiful day and it wasn’t spitting snow all day like it was at home! This is one of those winters that just won’t let go! And before we know it, we’ll be complaining that it’s too darned hot. We humans are seldom completely satisfied. That’s why I try to practice mindfulness and really experience what is happening in the moment because that’s really all we have. Once time passes, our only tie to it is our memories and the people we shared the experience with. And tomorrow? Who knows whether…or IF…tomorrow will come? No, all we have is the gift of the moment that God gives us. If we can make the best of as many of those as possible, then we’ve strung together a strand of pearls that constitute a beautiful life.

Today. What will today bring?

“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.”
