On Being Ready

If not now…when? I asked a sweet friend that question last night. She wants to travel in her camper and work. She can work from her camper. She wants to go. She just has some details to attend to. That’s cool. That’s all grown up and legitimate. But, if I talk to her this time next year and she hasn’t made any attempt to move on her dream, then something else is at play. The biggest obstacle I come across, after not having enough money, is fear.

Fear stops us in our tracks. Fear lies to us. The “what ifs” mount up till we can’t see over them. Fear is a big bully. But honestly…I’d much rather jump out the window than stand burning in the flames. There is always someone out there to catch me. And if He doesn’t catch me, He’ll give me wings to fly.

I was getting a pedicure yesterday and there were four young women there together. Obviously they were getting ready for an event and at their age, and given it is June, I correctly surmised it was a wedding. I love weddings. And I love talking to young women about to get married. It’s one of the advantages of being a crone…I get to mentor. We talked about the importance of keeping up your girlfriend relationships. They asked what I do and I told them about my writing and my camper and how I’ve put 35,000 miles on my truck in 20 months. I told them about losing Mr. Virgo. Then I pointed to my daughter and grand daughters and told them my most important job is to demonstrate to them what a strong woman does when she is dealt a crappy hand. I need to show them how to be alone and thrive.

I was so touched yesterday when my older daughter told me she is planning to fly to DC to hear me speak in August. I am honored.
