New Kicks!

Brooks walking shoes
“It pays to buy quality shoes!”

For about the last six months or so, I’ve noticed a pain in the ball of my left foot, near the base between my third and fourth toe. It feels like what we used to call a stone bruise. I rely on walking as my main exercise but this has become decidedly uncomfortable. I know I haven’t been wearing the right shoes this winter…mainly out of laziness. I just grab the quickest slip-ons and I know they don’t provide the proper support.

Yesterday was our appointment with the chiropractor. I really look forward to seeing her once a month. Ever since my accident two years ago, I have seen her with regularity. She thinks I have a Morton’s neuroma. I strongly suggest if someone thinks you have something, don’t Google it. You’ll find out things you wish you didn’t know like treatments and recurrence and surgeries and…yuck. She suggested I get better walking shoes.

My cousin’s wife texted yesterday and asked what I was up to.

“Heading to the mall to buy new WALKING SHOES!!!”

“Great! Get Brooks…they saved my feet!”

“?$$$”

“Yeah…but well worth it!!!”

I’m all about the cheap stuff, except when it comes to shoes. My feet have to carry me wherever I want to go. So, I’m willing to spend more for good quality shoes.

I stepped into one of those budget shoe stores first. No Brooks…no surprise. I stuck my hand in several pair and pressed on the material cushioning the ball of the foot. No go. They all felt like they had nothing but the 1/8th inch foam insole. That’s how I got in this problem in the first place.

I went on down the mall to the new sport clothing store. They didn’t have Brooks either. They had more running shoes than anything else and they don’t offer the comfort and support I was looking for either.

My next stop was Finish Line, a fitness and sporting shoe specialty store. They had Brooks! But, man…they were pricey! Still, I know my cousin’s wife has trouble with her feet and if she says Brooks saved her feet, I was going to try them. I asked for two different styles with different price points. Wow! The moment I put on the first pair, the pain eased significantly. They felt like I was walking on clouds. You know that feeling when you find the perfect shoe.

I vacillated. I hated to spend three figures on a pair of shoes. Yet, these felt wonderful. In the end, I bought the shoes. If you buy cheap shoes, you’ll be buying them repeatedly over the years. The last pair of good walking shoes I bought have lasted me four years. I bought these for $136. There’s no reason to believe these won’t also last four years and if they do, that’s $34 a year. I’m good with that.

We walked a few laps to test them out, then headed home. Mr. FixIt cleaned out the gutters in preparation for the huge rainstorm we are supposed to get over the next 36 hours or so. I tucked into TOW-Wanda and wrote till dusk. After supper, I wrote for another three hours.

43,148 words! ?❤️

  1. I was like you on shoes. I bought cheap. Until I hit my 60’s. I determined if my feet hurt everything hurts. So I have less shoes, but my feet feel great!

  2. Found a pair of Dr. Comfort at a yard sale – brand new. Didn’t feel quite right so passed on the $3, but worth $125. Lady said “take them free” and try. What a Godsend these are for arthritic big toe! Bless her everytime I wear them! So glad you will be strutting your stuff comfortably now!

  3. Yep, I spend 3 figures on my shoes also. Unfortunately they don’t last 3-4 years with my exercise.. my feet let me know when it’s time to head out to Fitniche to get another pair. I love their approach to getting you in the shoe you need.

  4. I’ve worn Brooks for about 10 years, but depending on how often you wear them (walking & exercising), you should replace them in 1-2 years as the cushioning wears down & shifts inside your shoes. They are really worth the price! Enjoy!

  5. Glad you got some good shoes. Even Brooks if worn daily will not effectively last a full year. Ask your dealer if they have any discount for multiple pairs, paying cash. Then you’ll have a standby pair or two waiting in the closet, and you won’t wear your present pair past the time you should stop wearing them. Goody for your happy feet!!

  6. My daughter just went through the surgery on both feet, wearing crocks off n on with the black boots. IT HURTS. Hoping she able to get into good shoes soon.
