Mondays are for Knitting

Forgive the color…the light in my lamp is so yellow.

Our knitting group met yesterday and as always…we had a lovely visit. One of the gals is just learning how to use her circular knitting machine so there was a lot of teaching going on. My time as shopkeeper and a student in the needlearts has paid off over and over. I love to teach people new skills. If we have an opportunity to create beautiful things that will outlive us, we’ve given the world a gift and part of us lives on. Enabling others to do the same is a duty and a privilege.

My dear friends Gail and Janine and I have a group chat where we touch base every day. Janine is the creator and Camper-in-Chief of Girl Camper. Every spring Girl Camper has a fundraising raffle benefiting the Hold You Foundation. They provide funds for things like utility bills and gas money to the families of ill children so they have one less worry. Gail and I will make some handmade items to contribute. I started knitting a pair of woolen mittens yesterday. This is my favorite mitten pattern…so quick and easy.

Mr. FixIt had an appointment in town midday so I had the afternoon to myself. While I would have loved to sit and knit, I got the jump on taxes and updated my online banks account. Online banking has made the old way of balancing a checkbook nearly obsolete. At any given time you can access your bank account and see exactly what’s going on. You can easily pull reports that list transactions to use when filing your taxes. There’s much to be said for the conveniences computers bring to our lives even as they can be misused tools of destruction. I actually have friends who wouldn’t know thing one about using a computer for anything but email. And a smartphone would make them apoplectic. In some ways, I envy them the simplicity of a life unplugged.

I remember when I crossed the threshold into cyber life. I was working on the computer and I very clearly knew I was at a crossroads. I could step off the edge of the cliff and learn things I couldn’t dream of…or I could hit the off button and tend to my knitting. Given that I am here, writing to you every evening, is a clear indicator that I jumped with both feet. Maybe someday I’ll pull back, but for now…I’m in the thick of it and not nearly ready to disconnect from you all. What a tiresome life it would be without knowing all of you beautiful people!
