Giving Back

My brother was born with cerebral palsy. He received therapy services from the Easter Seals Treatment Center for free as we had very little money growing up. My mom came from good, solid stock and she was determined she would somehow repay them for these services. Somewhere in the ’60s, she started working for the Center full time as their secretary putting together their mass-mailed fundraising efforts. She refused to take any pay for 7 years. Finally, the Board of Directors got together and insisted she get a paycheck for her services. She was so proud.

Easter Seals has been around for more than 90 years, helping children and adults with developmental disabilities attain the best quality of life they can. The Blennerhassett Hotel in Parkersburg, WV decorates the lobby and halls with Christmas trees sponsored by local businesses that are decorated by volunteers. These go up a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving and then they’re auctioned off to the highest bidders with the proceeds going to the Easter Seals. As soon as the trees are cleared out, the Gingerbread House Decorating Contest comes in. It is a festive time to grab a cup of coffee and wander around, getting in the Christmas spirit.

This lovely “tree” was created on a dress form and forms a stunning ball gown, complete with sash and poinsettia bow at the waist. It was decorated by my good friend, Jon Six (of Jon Six Hair Company) and his friends. Jon has a long history of giving back to a community that has so steadfastly supported his wonderful salon. From filling his own home with rescued dogs to filling a school bus with supplies for underprivileged children to selling tickets and fundraising for the local Humane Society, Jon’s altruism shines as an example for all of us to do more.

I spoke with a friend yesterday about this. We see people that need help, yet we often walk by, or we think someone else will take care of it. Or, two hours later it occurs how we might have been of assistance to someone. Keeping a giving heart can help us see those moments. We surely can do more. As a widow living on a pretty fixed income, I don’t donate financially like I used to. So I am keeping an eye out for opportunities where I CAN help. As Mr. Rogers said, “Look for the helpers.” Because where there are helpers, there is hope.
