“Getting Started”

I am “off the grid” for a few days of R&R with some girlfriends. No water, no electric, no cell service for 30 miles. Bliss!

Today’s post is about getting started. Do you ever find yourself with a massive project to do and it’s so huge, it’s overwhelming to look at? Do you feel frozen in place? What do you do to get motivated to take that first step?

A friend of mine recently reached a goal of walking 1,000 miles. When she started, she was 35 pounds or so heavier. She had to have wondered how on earth she was going to walk a thousand miles! That’s like….a LOT! But, she put on her walking shoes and started slowly, gradually working her way up to 4 miles a day. She wrote her total to date on a page from Joel Osteen’s devotional and posted it to her FB page. It was amazing to watch as she posted her daily journey and watching her transform. (Congratulations, Valerie!)

I hadn’t given downsizing and moving a thought till Easter Sunday. And now, here I am up to my armpits in alligators. It was SO hard to let go and dive in because it meant letting go of a lot of other things, too. Everyone…every single person on this earth has lost someone they love more than life itself. It sucks. It really, really does. And every single one of those people left behind will deal with it in their own way. There’s no right way or wrong way. I will say this though….I know personally, if I don’t take that uncomfortable, scary, intimidating, exhausting, resentful, angry first step, I’m going to stay hanging on this monkey bar forever and “ain’t nobody got time for that”.

Stop looking at the forest, or even the tree…pick a low branch and climb up. Tomorrow, choose another one. Before you know it, your view is going to be a lot farther and a lot prettier. And if you can’t do that, ask for help. We’re all in this thing together…no one is really and truly alone.
