Day 166: Making Hay While the Sun Shines

Grandma’s Hydrangea full of Honeybees

I thought for sure I was going to be a lady of leisure yesterday. But, nooooooooo! Even though it was Sunday, the Weather Channel App informed us first thing when we woke up what our day was going to entail. We had absolutely no other choice than to go to the farm and mow. But first, we had to go back to town. We got to the pharmacy too late on Saturday and then, when I opened up my brand new jelly maker, the knob for the lid was missing. Fortunately, they had another one and held it for me till we could get back yesterday morning.

As soon as we got back home, we loaded up the truck and the trailer and headed to the farm with the mowers and assorted tools and materials we needed for a project we are working on. The grass was still pretty wet, but I went ahead and mowed anyway. It just meant I had to mow over it several times to mulch up the wet clumps of grass that gets left behind. It takes twice as long, but you do what you have to do.

The Gas Meter between the House and the Barn

While I mowed, Mr. FixIt got to work on rebuilding the cover for the gas meter. The week after the tree brought down the power lines, a smaller tree fell…narrowly missing the gas meter itself. It basically crushed the old sheet metal “lean to” that covered the gas meter to protect it from the weather…and I suppose falling limbs, as well. Mr. FixIt took the pieces of mangled sheet metal and removed all the rotten wood and laid them out on the sidewalk. Then he took a heavy hammer and the rubber mallet and beat it back flat.

Rebuilding the Cover for the Gas Meter

He measured and cut the wood to rebuild the frame. I finished mowing the front yard about the time he needed me to help reassemble the lean to. We realized when we got the sides and back done that we were going to need more wood. So, we put our tools away and I made lunch while he ran the weed eater. After lunch, I mowed the back yard with the push mower and he finished the weed eating. We were about done in by the time we loaded the mowers back up and headed home.

That’s when Mr. FixIt said the back yard at the Ponderosa really needed to be mowed but he just didn’t think he had it in him to do it. I told him that was no problem…I could do it. We unloaded the mowers and I set to work. He emptied the truck and took everything inside and came out to run the weed eater around the fence, the sidewalk, and the pool. He can’t stand it if I’m working and he’s not helping.

We finally finished around dark and that was the end of our day. I know it was Sunday and we aren’t supposed to work on Sunday. But, we enjoyed seeing the fruits of our labor and working together on a project. We talked about God and brought Him with us in everything we did. And, we thanked Him for Mr. FixIt’s improved health that allows him to do the things he loves to do. We are so grateful to still have access to the farm. We are so grateful for our health and our home and our relationship. So that had to suffice for our “Sunday Sermon” this week. We can watch our online church today…God will still love us.

Oh, I wish you could have heard the honeybees on Grandma’s hydrangea bush out back! When I came around the corner of the house to take stuff inside, I could hear them from twenty feet away. A man down the road keeps about 25-30 hives so we have lots of bees which makes me so happy. The Rose of Sharon is nearly spent. There was another limb down from the huge old cherry tree out back so I told Mr. FixIt I need to get my vintage trailer out of there and bring her to the Ponderosa to work on before the snow flies.

There’s never a dull moment around here and I’m telling you…TODAY I am taking the day off. After I make a pan of lasagna…and maybe an apple pie!
