Counting on God to Keep Us Safe

Land’s sake…it sure was hot here yesterday! We drove up to the mountain town I lived in for twenty-eight years. Coming through the mountains presented a different vista around every turn. And again, God kept us safe. Just moments after we drove through the Eisenhower Tunnel, a car caught fire right inside the tunnel! The traffic had slowed down just as we headed in and remarked to Mr. FixIt how I hate going in when it looks like that. Turns out there was a reason for my unease, but God got us through it unscathed. Thank you, Jesus.

Further along, just past Vail, we saw a large number of first responders over in the eastbound lanes. We couldn’t tell what was going on when we passed. There were no cars wrecked and there were a dozen or so cyclists standing along the guard rail. When we arrived at our hotel, I looked it up on the Vail news and saw the story. Apparently there was a man fishing along the edge of the Gore River which flows briskly through there. He had a dog with him. Then a man and woman who were cycling by saw the man slip in the river and head downstream. A group of cyclists ran to the rescue and managed to get the man out of the water. Unfortunately, from what I can find, they hadn’t seen the dog again. I hope they found it.

We were going to go straight to the hotel and check in, but we got to town earlier than we thought we would so we went to visit my brother. As it turns out, he wasn’t at the day program so we backtracked and went to his house for a visit. He’s still adjusting to his new surroundings and has been somewhat resistant to making some of the changes that he needs to make. After we said our initial hellos, I asked him how he was doing and he said it was a long story. I told him I was all ears and he said no, he needed to talk to Mr. FixIt…man to man.

I have the dearest husband on the planet. He said, “Sure thing, buddy.” He closed the door after me and the fellas sat and talked for about 45 minutes. When they came out, lo and behold, my brother said he knew he needed to do the things that were suggested and he was going to commit to it. He needs to do these things for his own health and safety. Knowing he’s not going to fight the extra help made me breathe a sigh of relief. He just feels bad asking for help, but Mr. FixIt made him understand what he’s going through is completely normal and it’s ok to ask for help with personal things.

We left him feeling happier and more settled and we went to check into the hotel. By this time, we were more than ready for supper so we headed to Chili’s. They have some good selections for those making healthy dietary choices. I had Ancho Salmon, seasoned rice, and a double order of steamed broccoli. Yummmm!

We’ll have a slow morning then go to visit my brother at the day program again. We stay another night then head back to Denver tomorrow. We’re really winding down the trip now. We’ll be back home on the 31st!

Hope you are taking care during this heat wave! It was 102° here yesterday! Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks, my friends!!!

  1. So happy for you and Mr. Fixit! What a nice vacation you are having! Enjoy every minute! Safe travels! ?❤️??

  2. I got the alert on my phone about fire in tunnel and thought about your travel that way. Glad you made it safely. It’s nice you got to see your brother again. Your such a great sister. Enjoy Colorado. As you leave that state I come back for a few days.

  3. We drove over the pass as it was one of two options and it was beautiful. A slow climb to watch the wild flowers and the water flow and seeing a variety of waterfalls along the way. It has been decades that I have traveled over Loveland pass. A nice little side trip to my adventures this week. Cheers!
