I Need This Mug!

Possum mug

I think I finally got a handle on my possum problem here at the farm. I have been fiddling around with the cats’ feeding schedule and did some research online. I started feeding them once a day and unless they search me out asking for something in the evening, that’s all they get. By noon they aren’t eating anything anyway so I pick up their dishes and set them inside a galvanized bucket with a locking lid. Bingo! No more late night visits from a passel of possums!

I think this is the week to bring in the hummingbird feeders. We need to encourage them to move along before it gets too cold. We have two really hot days coming then the weather turns cool. We have so many leaves falling. This year they seem to have just turned brown and fallen off. Not a lot of color in my woods.

The grass is still growing. The lawn will need mowing again soon. The days are getting shorter and there is less and less light in this old holler. I changed the light up high on the barn yesterday in preparation for long, dark winter evenings. The dogwoods are full of red berries. It’s a beautiful time of year.

My talk last night was well received. They gave me a mum for my yard. I’ll cherish that. Today is prep day for tomorrow’s trip up to the campground. I think this is the last hurrah for the camping season. Always a sad thing.

Tell me about the leaves where you are! ❤️

“And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:14‬ ‭NIV‬

  1. Here in central Oklahoma, the leaves are falling fast. They have not changed color. They are just falling! My front yard is covered with them. It is too early for that!

  2. My hummers moved on a while ago but I am still getting travelers from further north that are passing through and need that quick burst of nourishment. Hummers are genetically programmed to fly south. Humans play no role in when they decide to go. Taking your feeders in too early only removes a food source that they need for the journey.

  3. I think we have very little color this year as you said. I understand there are pockets of color here and there if you travel out and about! I guess it is to do with the wet and cool summer…till now of course! No rain for a couple of weeks and ..a heat wave…several days in the 90’s! Hot and humid for Vermont!

  4. We had the same problem with possums & other critters. We used to have several cats but over the years they’ve all disappeared or been killed. We now feed neighborhood cats so my husband takes up any leftover cat food. We’re mostly having problems with raccoons getting into our bird feeders.?

  5. We live in West Virginia but are traveling. A few days ago we were in Colorado. Estes Park was beautiful, full of fall colors and the elk were magnificent. Maroon Bells and the awesome golden aspens took my breath away. We are blessed to live in this beautiful country! And I feel incredibly blessed to be able to travel to see it. Yesterday Devils Tower…wow! Today, Mount Rushmore! I really enjoy your blog, thanks for sharing with us.

  6. I read the other day that hummingbirds leave when it’s time regardless of food supply. They travel alone and not in flocks so don’t need mass amounts. Yesterday was the first time I didn’t see any at our feeder. I’ve been wondering when they were leaving.

  7. Leaves are just starting to color a little here, although there were trees that were full blown a couple of weeks ago. Leaves are falling off the crimson king maples. Been dry in this part of NE Ohio, haven’t mowed grass since August, but it needs it one more time b4 winter.

  8. Here in middle GA the leaves are for the most part are still green. There are small patches in the trees of the red and orange to come!

  9. In Auburn, Alabama the leaves haven’t really started changing colors. We do have a lot of brown/dead ones falling all over our patio in the campground. We are heading into Tennessee next week so hopefully we’ll start to see some color!!
