What a Nice “Day Off”

It seems funny to say…I need a day off. I mean, every day is a day off, isn’t it? Retirement is wonderful in that we don’t have to get up every day and drive to work and stay there for.ev.er. Then drive back home and cook supper and clean up then crash for an hour before bedtime…only to get up the next morning and do it all over again. To be honest, I think I’ve worked a lot harder since I’ve retired. I’ve certainly kept busy and accomplished a lot. The only difference is…it’s mostly fun when you GET to do it as opposed to HAVE to do it.

I warmed up corn cakes and fixed some eggs for breakfast. Once I cleaned up the kitchen, i could sit down and work on my next project. I bought some of the most wonderful yarn at the knit shop this week. Mochi from Berroco is 37% baby alpaca, 35% nylon, 24% fine merino wool, and 2% “other fibers”…whatever that is. The yarn is cabled instead of twisted and it’s light as a feather. Yet, with all those wonderful natural fibers and all that air space, I think it’s going to be really warm without all the weight.

This yarn is so soft and light, it’s like knitting with gossamer.

In the late afternoon, I went in to fix supper. I was going to bake some smoked kielbasa in sauerkraut. I turned on the oven, then mixed up the ingredients in a small baking dish. However, when I went to put the casserole dish in, the oven wasn’t hot. Uh-oh. I immediately knew there was something amiss and it most certainly had something to do with the control panel I replaced earlier this week. I ran through all the steps in my mind, wondering if I forgot to plug something in. I couldn’t think of anything.

When I put the new panel in, it didn’t look exactly like the one I took out, but I just figured they had updated it. Mr. FixIt is the one who looked up the part for me so I was sure it was right. I just put it in without giving it much thought and I must admit…I didn’t turn on the stove to see if it worked. I went online and downloaded the user’s manual and I couldn’t find any troubleshooting steps that helped.

I finally went on the Frigidaire website itself, put in the model number of the stove, and looked up the replacement parts. Once I got a close look, I could see where the problem was. The two control panels looked exactly alike except for one small detail. In the bottom right corner of the new panel, there was a selection called “Quick Bake”. In the same space on the old panel, it was a “Lock” icon. Neither one of us caught that and we had two sets of eyes on it. I’ve ordered the new part and started a return process for the part that doesn’t fit. I knew that job was too easy!

I decided to make another sweater with the same pattern as the one I made for Big. It was quick and easy…and it has classic lines. I don’t have a traditional cardigan so maybe this one’s for me…maybe not. I’ll decide when I’m finished. We are supposed to go to my cousin’s place in the country this evening for a bonfire and a barbecue, but it’s supposed to rain hard today. We’ll just have to wait and see. Rainy days are nice for knitting!

“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.”

Proverbs 31:10-13 ESV
