Waiting on the Half Runners

Sharing Last Year’s Bounty

We received wonderful news yesterday. Daughter #1 and the kids got home safe and sound from their 33 day, 5700 mile adventure! I told Mr. FixIt…he had no idea what a weight that lifted off my shoulders when I saw their beautiful smiles, sitting in their driveway! She said the car fairly exploded with stuff as they opened it all up and started unloading. God is good and He kept my babies safe!

One thing happened when they were here that absolutely melted my heart. My oldest child is NOT sentimental. Like, AT ALL. But when she was here, I served my home canned half runner beans one night for supper. Those were the only kind of green beans my grandma would grow, so when she tasted them…it was a memory from her childhood. Just like it is for me. When she was here, I asked her if she’d like a jar of my apple butter and she happily set it aside to pack when they came to pick Little up. As she was walking through the kitchen the other evening, she asked if she could have a jar of my green beans. I said, “Sure…take two!” She texted me last night to ask me how I prepared them because she wanted my son-in-law to enjoy them. There is NOTHING like having your daughter ask you how you make something.

I was soaking in the pool last night as the sun was setting. It was a hot one yesterday and the water was pleasantly refreshing. I thought of Little. She loves swimming and was in our pool every chance she could get. I sent her a picture and told her we’d do it again next year!

Mr. FixIt came out while I was floating around and cut a zucchini and a crookneck squash from the garden and went straight inside and cooked it. I was full so I didn’t have any…I just let him enjoy it. Now…when the tomatoes start ripening…watch out!

I contacted a gal from Witten’s Farm last night, asking when their half runners will be ready. They are so much work to grow, and she said they lost two whole fields of them last year…one to rain, and the other due to lack of labor to pick them. The current price is $65 a bushel, however…I got 27 quarts out of the bushel I bought last year. That comes out to about $2.40 a quart. To me, they’re like green gold so that price doesn’t bother me a bit. Covid messed with a lot of things last year, and we will still see the trickle down from that for years to come, I’m afraid. I had a lovely chat with her, and told her I’d love to do a feature article on their farm, so watch for that later in the summer.

We went to town yesterday, ran a couple of errands, walked at the mall, bought some ice cream and sat in the park to eat it. It was a perfectly beautiful mid-summer day! As I wrote this last evening sitting in TOW-Wanda, Mr. FixIt texted me and said, “Look outside…there’s a deer right in front of the building!” We honestly live in a slice of heaven!
