The Sky is Falling! The Sky is Falling!

I wrote this post yesterday afternoon as I sat basking in the warmth of the sunlight streaming in the south facing windows. It was the first time I’ve seen the sun in a week…one of the decidedly downsides of living in the Mid-Ohio Valley. We’ve been getting reports of an impending major snowstorm since I got in on Monday. Estimations of snowfall amounts change not only hourly, but with each flip of the channel or click on a weather app. This puzzles me.

I’ve lived in Colorado nearly all of my adult life. My older daughter had ONE snow day in all of her school years and that was because it was so cold the school bus wouldn’t start. I think it was about 30 below. Other than that one day, kids were expected to get their happy butts to school and we adults had darned well better make it to work, too! Medical staff were brought to hospitals via volunteer snowmobilers during the Christmas Eve Blizzard of ’82. West Virginia’s governor called a “state of emergency preparedness” on Wednesday…two days before said snowpocolypse. Yesterday, the local branch of WVU as well as nearly every county in West Virginia cancelled classes for today without seeing a single flake of Snowmageddon. Ok, that being said, driving in storms here is quite different than in Colorado. There’s a boatload more ice here and I have to agree that’s no fun to drive in. And still, the guys at the tire shop laughed at me when I had my four studded snow tires put on. Who’s laughing NOW, huh?

So, with all this talk of impending doom, I joined the rush on the grocery store to stock up on such necessities as half and half for my coffee, and some bottled water. People were clearing the shelves of eggs, milk, bread, and toilet paper. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never in my life run out of toilet paper. Oh, maybe once or twice I had to resort to using Kleenex. But seriously…what are these people DOING with all this toilet paper??? Just how long are they expecting to be snowed in…six weeks? Six months??? I don’t go through that much toilet paper in a YEAR! Holy cats!!!

Anyway, I cooked a pork roast yesterday so I can make my favorite green chili. I have enough food in my pantry to last till June. I have ice cream and non-alcohol beer and eggs and cheese and…oh heck, I’ve got one of everything, two of most.

And….I’ve got six rolls of toilet paper. That ought to get me through just about anything!
