The Naked Ladies Are Out!!!

Not a great picture, but it was already dark.

No, not THOSE kinds of naked ladies! I’m talking about those uber cool pink lilies that kind of just pop up out of nowhere and show off for such a brief time in late summer. We had a super fun day yesterday. I hunkered down and knitted and baked a cake then went to a kitchen gadget party at 4:00 with my cousin while the guys hung out at the bunk house and lit the fire. After the gals finished with the party, we went to join the guys. It rained buckets while we were in the Community Building, but the rest of the evening was lovely. There was a huge tree across the road when we came around a bend. Good thing we were going slow so I could stop. A lot of people out in the country have a chainsaw in the back of their truck for just such emergencies and someone had cut just enough out of the downed tree to let one car at a time come through.

We stopped at the farm after to make sure everything was in working order. It was dark by the time we headed home. We came around a curve out on the two lane and there was a car on the other side of the road with its flashers on. I could barely make out someone waving his arms trying to get out attention. I slowed down to see if they needed help and it turned out there were lines across the road. Apparently the storm took them down. Not knowing how long it would take to get help out there, we turned around and took the long way home. There’s never a dull moment in the boonies of West Virginia. I was amazed at the number of cars we passed on that country road. The only thing I could figure is they were heading home from the County Fair.

We were happy as little clams to get home from our evening out, but it was getting past my time for productive writing. I’m kinda worthless after 10:00…I turn into a pumpkin! Instead of writing a long story, I’ll share the recipe for the cake I made for the cookout. I watch a YouTube channel called Celebrating Appalachia that I dearly love. I often watch her videos while I knit and I always learn something wonderful. Tipper was talking about the church suppers held during Homecoming, also known as Decoration Day. When she was a child, she ran to the dessert table every time to see if anyone brought Chess Cake because it was her all time favorite. So, of course I had to make one! It is SO quick and easy and it really yummy! Here is a link to the recipe on Tipper’s blog called The Blind Pig and the Acorn. When I make it next time, I’m going to cut the powdered sugar in half and maybe add an extra egg to that topping mixture. It was really rich!
