The Cookie Fairy

While I really wanted to just sit in my big red chair and knit all day yesterday…it didn’t happen. Those cookies were not going to deliver themselves, so we grabbed everything we needed and headed for town…again! It turned out to not take nearly as long as we thought it would. Our first stop was the Former Mrs. FixIt’s house where we found out she was going to see the rest of the kids that evening for their annual gingerbread house extravaganza. So instead of driving all over town, we asked if she would take the cookies and give them to the kids for us. I didn’t want them to wait till we get to see them over the holidays because the cookies wouldn’t be in their prime.

Since that freed us up, we ran a couple of errands and went home. I heated up the chicken noodles from the night before then baked a batch of cookies. Whether you call them Mexican Wedding Cookies or Russian Tea Cakes, these feathery light sweets literally melt in your mouth and I ate WAY too many of them! They were my first cookies that I’ve eaten this season because I’ve given up chocolate, but still…it was hard not to keep nibbling.

I found the recipe in The All-New Blue Ribbon Cookbook. I’ve had the original version for decades and when I searched to see if Catherine Hanley had any other cookbooks, there was just this new edition. You can get one HERE if you are interested.

I was about to pop the first cookie sheet in the oven when the phone rang. Our grandson had some car trouble up on the hill above our house and needed a ride. Grandpa to the rescue and in five minutes…my boys were here!!! I was so busy loving on them and baking cookies and just gazing at our good fortune to have the unexpected visit…I totally spaced on getting a picture! But they’ll be back next week sometime for our Christmas, so we’ll have more opportunities.

I finished baking the last of the cookies after they left. I put two London broils in to marinate last night and I’ll grill them this afternoon. I’ll slice them, bag up dinner sized portions, and our main dish for several meals will be in the freezer. I love cooking ahead and having the ease of taking something out to thaw instead of running to the store. When the kids were here last evening, I took any special requests they had for dinner when they’re here. Homemade Mac & Cheese! Easy peasy and the boys will love it, too!

I’m heading to town yet again this morning. This time it’s to have coffee with my classmates from high school. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a chance to get together and I’m really looking forward to seeing them! Hanukkah starts at sundown on Sunday night. I have some friends I’d like to have over to make latkes one day next week. There’s a fellow here in our town who has a yearly event in one of the local restaurants. He makes latkes and people come from all over to get some. I’ve missed his event the last few years, so we’ll just make our own!
