The Blessings of Autumn

The Forsythia are Blooming…Again!

I spoke to my cousin last week. She told me she and my aunt were out for a nice walk. It had finally “cooled off” and was only 84 degrees. They live near Las Vegas. Summer is 120! I can’t imagine living like that, yet that’s what’s coming with global warming, I’m afraid. I remember living in Colorado. There was always that moment when you knew autumn was coming hard. You get up and turn on the furnace. Then, mid-day…you turn off the furnace, take off your hoodie, and open the windows. Then, mid-afternoon…you change into shorts, close the windows, and turn on the AC. Then, the sun sets. You turn off the AC, open the windows to catch a breath of fresh air. Shortly after, you close the windows, put the hoodie back on…and maybe socks. By bedtime, you have the electric blanket warming up and maybe you can get by without the furnace for a while longer.

The African Lily is Putting Out Seed Pods

Here in West Virginia, it’s a different game. We have humidity. That makes the heat feel hotter and the cold feel colder. It’s been quite a while since we’ve had the AC on, and we aren’t anywhere near needing the furnace. I slept in the camper Saturday night and the temps got down in the 50’s. It was right comfortable out there, although I did turn on the electric blanket on low.

Another Giant Puffball has Started on the Lawn

We still have much to do to prepare for winter. We need to close down the pool yet. The garden needs cleaned up, the brush pile burned, and some shutters replaced. Mr. FixIt is going to put new rotors and brakes on his truck this week if it doesn’t rain too much. I need to winterize the camper and clean it out from the last trip. We were so busy all year, my brain has kinda been on autopilot since we got back from Colorado. I need to get moving and get things done around here. The snow will fly before we know it!

Passion Fruit…also called Passion Flower Pods

I wandered around the yard over the weekend and took some more photos. The flowers are producing seed pods for next year. I harvested some seeds from the evening primrose under grandma’s kitchen window at the farm. I need to see if I can get some more before the wind scatters them everywhere. I didn’t get the iris thinned out this year…again. Maybe next year will be better…less hectic. Whadda ya think? Any chance of that? lol
