The Arctic Blast is Coming

The temps are taking a nosedive in the coming days and we commented yesterday how thrilled we are that we don’t have to go out in it. We awoke yesterday morning to the news that our fourth great-grandchild was born in the wee small hours. Another healthy baby…thank you, God! That makes four little ones now. It’s really hard not getting together like we did pre-pandemic. Some of the family vaccinates…some don’t. We don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable so we will hold off our visits till spring when we can all sit outside.

When we saw the weather forecast yesterday, Mr. FixIt asked if we had any appointments coming up or do we have a stretch of time to stay in. I was thrilled to see we don’t have anything till Tuesday. More knitting time! When I was finishing the striped socks last week, I thought I was going to run out of wool. I ordered an extra skein, then ended up not using it. Since you only get one sock per skein out of this particular yarn, I went ahead and ordered a second one. Since I finished the “seascape” socks Tuesday night, I started a new pair with the striped yarn yesterday morning. It knits up much faster than the fingering yarn I just finished.

I’m hoping to bake some sourdough bread this weekend. I haven’t made any since I taught Little how to bake it last summer. I bought yet another new sourdough starter last week. I’m hoping I can keep this one alive better than I did the last one. I threw myself into baking the first year of the coronavirus. I also managed to pack on about twenty pounds. I have finally started losing that, so I need to be careful and not bake or eat out of boredom. I have a tub of chocolate chip cookie dough in the fridge. I’ve discovered if I just bake four cookies and put the tub away, we don’t keep sneaking into the kitchen to mindlessly grab more.

I am finding it harder to get out and get some fresh air when it’s this cold. I need to make a more concerted effort to walk the perimeter of our property…at least a few times a week. On the plus side, I’m not feeling the winter blahs as much this years as I have in years past. We are trying to put joyful things in front of us to look forward to. We have a trip to Columbus next week for a doctor’s appointment, which in and of itself is not joyful. However, Mr. FixIt’s 70th Birthday is coming up the following week so we will stay overnight to celebrate in some way.

April is our trip to the beach. And May sees us heading to Colorado for Big’s graduation from high school, then rushing back here for our youngest FixIt grandchild’s graduation. So, I either need to have my surgery in February or March…or wait till after the graduations are over. We’ll just have to see what they can do.

What are you doing to help pass the time this winter? Are you working on projects or reading good books? Show us what you’ve got by sharing photos of your projects in the comments.
