Snow Day in West Virginia

We awoke to about three inches of fluffy powdery snow yesterday morning. Schools were closed and traffic was light so all was still in this fresh winter scene. It was about 14° and the window was over. I slept like a baby. Poor Mr. FixIt comes in every morning and shivers as he makes his way to the window to shut it. Then he sits on the side of the bed and we have a lovely little visit. He’s a real sport about it, too.

Sometimes, I wake up before him. I get the kettle on, make my coffee and have a little time to myself to read my devotional before he’s up and about. Such was the case yesterday. I had a package waiting for me at the Post Office so I asked if he thought the roads would be clear later in the afternoon. He reminded me our county road crew is really good at keeping the roads clear, so I headed out in the snow.

The hardest part about that drive can be getting out of the driveway, but I just shifted the truck into 4WD and didn’t have a bit of trouble. And, like Mr. FixIt said, the roads were clear. I ran to the Post Office, got my package and stopped in the Pig to get some ground beef for a pot of chili. It was sure a chili kind of day!

I set up my new machine and started working on it. The last time we had Knitting Group, one of the gals had just gotten the same unit and she was having trouble getting it to work. It had a tendency to split the yarn. When I sat down to work on mine, it did the same thing, but I remembered what the gals did last week to make the knitting machine work so I followed suit.

It has a tendency to split the yarn on the first two to three roads, but if you use a loom pick to lift that stitch to its correct position it starts working eventually. I decided to use scrap yarn for the first 10 rows or so and that really helped. I managed to make a couple little preemie or doll hats. They were so, so little and sweet. I started working on a baby blanket, too. I want to make some things I can take to the birthing center at our local hospital. Hats and blankets are most appreciated because there are babies that go without much in the way of a layette waiting for them.

I spent some time in the afternoon watching TV with Mr. FixIt and crocheting on the market bag. I made a big pot of chili and let it simmer on the stove all afternoon. It was so yummy! I love chili on a snowy day. We are getting the deep freeze that’s been plaguing the Midwest this week and as I was writing this last night it was 14° with a wind chill of 7°. Still, not as bad as a lot of the country, but cold enough.

Mr. FixIt has to go to town today, but I’ll stay here and get some things done. I hope you all are faring well in this deep freeze! Be safe!
