Positive Aging is a Mindset

So, 68 years and 1 day. I don’t feel a bit different on the inside. I’m still younger on the inside, but I’d have to say…overall, I’m crushing this aging thing. I’m always doing something because there’s always something to do. That keeps you young! There is truth in the old adage “Use it or lose it.” I’m so happy to see Mr. FixIt feeling like getting up and moving and working hard. And, if he’s working…I’m working. That’s just how it works.

It was 87 degrees yesterday afternoon and I was out there trimming and pruning and cutting down trees. I moved three truckloads of trimmings to the burn pile. I cut down half a dozen maple trees. I trimmed this tunnel-like area where I drive the tractor when I’m mowing. Everything grows like a tropical rainforest here, so it needs to be cut back frequently. I cut that weed/plant/tree thing that was taking over the corner of the house. And I trimmed and pruned the crabapple and one of the pear trees.

I worked a half hour at a time and took breaks in the AC. I discovered this electrolyte powder called DripDrop that was designed by an ER physician to keep people from needing an IV. I’ve found if I drink at least one of those when I’m working in the heat, I do really well and I recover quickly. When we finally finished, I was going to jump in the pool, but I haven’t had the water tested yet this year so I decided to wait to make sure the chemicals are right.

Mr. FixIt finished mudding the drywall yesterday. So today he can sand it then paint. Once he gets that done, he can plumb the fixtures and put in the lights. I have an old medicine cabinet that I want to put in there to give it a country feel. A little trim work and he’ll be finished. In the meantime, the next three days are supposed to be much cooler. Our son-in-law is going to help Mr. FixIt with some projects around the yard tomorrow. And my bonus daughter will help me inside.

I’m feeling much better about things this week. I was struggling a little last week. Feeling a little overwhelmed. Feeling a little old. Feeling a little stressed and anxious. I know from past experience…if I get back to reading my devotionals every day and reading what the Bible says about what I’m going through, I always feel better. Because I know Jesus is big enough and strong enough to carry everything I give him. I just have to remember to give it and stop taking it back!

We are all a work in progress, aren’t we?

Even at 68!
