Nap Time!

“Stressed out? There’s a nap for that!”

Ah, to be a kindergartner. To be five and the only responsibility is tying my shoes and keeping a goldfish alive. Someone to give me a cold glass of milk and a warm cookie. Someone to tuck me in with a kiss to my forehead. It’s nap time.

Entire cultures revolve around naps. Some corporations in Japan offer small cubicles where workers can take a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of a busy life. Einstein worked for a few hours at a time then slept, rising to repeat the cycle and look what it did for HIS brain! I’m not talking the escapism of depression here. That kind of napping is unhealthy. No, I’m talking about taking a break from the BUSY and slow down. A power nap. A peaceful nap. An oasis in an overly cluttered life.

My schedule has been pretty packed here of late. Gone are those large stretches of time that I needed to survive this year of grieving. I sleep well at night. But occasionally I need to just stop and recharge. I have a friend in her eighties. She is like a mom to me. As a matter of fact, she and her husband stood up for me as my parents when I married Mr. Virgo. I was visiting her the other day. The sun was shining through the south windows. We were enjoying a lazy day, chatting by the fire, when we both started yawning. I feel quite at home at her house, so I just told her I was going to lay down for 30 minutes then I would take her to her doctor’s appointment. I came out refreshed and ready for whatever the rest of the day offered me.

We don’t always have the opportunity to nap, but if you can swing it…go for it. I’ll have cookies and milk for you when you wake up!
