My Mini Me

When Daughter #1 was growing up, she was the spitting image of me. From looks to mannerisms to basic interests, we were two peas in a pod. This went on till she grew up, married, and moved as far away from me as possible. Not that moving so far away was the whole point. It just so happened that an amazing job opportunity opened up and they moved to Long Island, leaving me at home with a foundering marriage and a precocious five year old. I was bereft. She learned there was a whole great big world beyond the borders of “Mom”. Which is good. She’s worldly, diverse, self-confident and can talk about anything with anyone.

When I first met Big, I knew she was much like her daddy…and the new version of my daughter. As well, she should be. She is an observer, takes everything in, and if she is feeling like she doesn’t get enough of your attention, she will be sure to let you know. She’s smart, strong, and independent.

When I first met Little, I knew she was my mini-me. So much like her mama when she was little. Fun, funny, creative, smart, tender hearted, and so loving and demonstrative. This time with her is nothing short of magic. We love a lot of the same things. And those things we may not be well enough versed in to form an opinion, the other is more than willing to teach.

We left yesterday around noon and headed to town for our antiquing excursion. I had the goal of finding a nice cast iron griddle for her to bake buttermilk biscuits on. We found everything but that. I bought her a good sized biscuit bowl, a sifter, and a biscuit cutter. I’ll keep looking for a griddle. I told her I would bring all these things to Colorado with me when we go in September. That way I don’t have to worry about anything getting broken.

Little was fabulous looking through the antiques stores. She found all kinds of things that piqued her interest. I found some old welding goggles and had her try them on. Oh, my gosh! They were SO cute! She’ll use them in some of her cosplay. She found a small doll to add to her collection. She was curious about what things were and how they were used. I’m telling you…I was in hog heaven!

We decided to head out into the country to another antique dealer where I know they usually carry a good deal of cast iron. We stopped at Fort Boreman Park and looked out over the Ohio River taking the obligatory photos with the magnificent view behind us. Little learned about humidity yesterday. As we were driving through the country, she noticed everything in the distance was blue. I explained how we can see the air here because of the high humidity. She told Mr. FixIt over supper that we can see the oxygen here. Indeed, we can!

We didn’t find the griddle we were looking for so we drove to the farm to pick up a few more things that I wanted to bring home. When we got there, we ate supper and jumped in the pool to cool off. Divine!

Today we prepare for our camping trip. We leave in the morning!

The time…I want to slow down the time.
