My Favorite Wildflower

    Trillium“Trillium – My Favorite Wildflower”

It’s a toss-up…trillium or Jack-in-the-Pulpit. I love them both, but since Jack-in-the-Pulpit doesn’t grow on the farm (at least, not that I have found) I’ll have to go with trillium. The pristine white, three-petalled blossoms come out in early May every year. The dogwood have bloomed, finally. Mayapple is up, but no blooms yet. I still haven’t ventured over to the ditch by the old garden to see if I can catch some sprigs of asparagus. The redbud is just about gone. It was amazing to watch trees leaf out in a matter of a couple of days this last week.

This is by far my favorite time of the year here in West Virginia. The world is coming back to life after a long, dull-grey winter with a vibrant spring-green not easily duplicated. The temps have dropped quite a bit from last week’s. I took the electric blanket off the bed last week when the night time temperatures weren’t going below the low 70’s. So, last night I had to dig around in the guest bedroom for something extra to throw on the bed. I came across an old “Bow Tie” quilt I bought at an antique store years ago. Some of the fabrics have become quite fragile, but these things are meant to be uses as far as I’m concerned. I love old quilts. I can always figure out a way to justify the expense.

The other day, I was out cleaning up the camper preparing for the upcoming travel season. Remember how I told you Mr. Virgo sends me birds? Well, I came out the door to empty the dustpan and here was this little guy sitting there watching me. He didn’t seem afraid at all. I spoke to him gently and he stayed for a while then was gone. I didn’t see him coming or going. It was odd.

I spent much of the day yesterday helping my friend Deneene begin the daunting task of downsizing and preparing to sell her house. It really brought up a lot of memories for me. Seems like forever ago. I came home and helped Mr. FixIt mow the Ponderosa. Then we grilled steaks for dinner. I added creamed new potatoes with peas, sliced tomatoes, and collard greens with peppered bacon, Vidalia Onions, and a splash of cider vinegar. It was a great day!

I saw this little story on the Sisters on the Fly Facebook page yesterday. At some of our events, we hold a little “garage sale” by our tents and donate the proceeds to a charity, usually chosen by the event hostess. It seems this happened recently and a Sister brought a bagful of yarn and a half finished potholder. She explained to a lady looking over her wares that the yarn had belonged to her mother and she doesn’t crochet. The Sister bought the whole bag of yarn. Yesterday, she received a lovely note in the mail from her….with several finished potholders. The note read, “Now you can think of your mother. I hope you enjoy them!” I literally cried…what a sweet and loving gesture. This is why I love my girl camping friends. They have big hearts! ❤
