Missing My Mom

Sickness meme
“Do you miss your mom when you’re sick?”

I felt perfectly fine all day yesterday. I ran errands and visited with people. Then, at the end of the day, I got my bangs cut and my stylist said she had a sore throat and felt a cold coming on. By the time I got home, I was feverish, achy, stuffy, coughing…just, ugh. I’m sure I couldn’t possibly have gotten it from her that quickly, but it sure came on fast.

I came home, used my Zicam and took DayQuil and slept for an hour. Used my inhaler. Took my vitamins. Drank tea. Did a tribal dance and twirled a dead chicken over my head. I’m kidding about the dead chicken, but I’d do just about anything to keep from getting a full fledged cold.

Remember when you were a little kid and your mom would take care of you when you were sick? I liked that. Mom would put her cool hand on my fevered brow and go get the thermometer. She would give me a couple of baby aspirin or maybe a piece of that hideous Aspergum. Then she’d make toast and tea. Or milk toast…a slice of toast with warm milk poured over it and sprinkled with sugar. That I wasn’t crazy about. Sometimes she would cuddle me on her lap and sing “Bye-o Baby Buntin” then she would tuck me in and turn down the lights. If I was really sick, she pulled a chair up by my bed and read stories to me till I went to sleep. I miss my mom. Even today when I’m sick, I miss my mom. I have Mr. FixIt, thank God. But nothing ever replaces your mama’s hand on your fevered brow. ❤

“Heal me, Lord, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.”
‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭17:14‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  1. My Mom, my best friend, passed away in 1997. I think of her every day. She was such a gentle lady, dignified and kind. Even when her body was ravaged by cancer, she still remained calm and generous with her her smile. If I could be half the woman that she was, I would be happy! I miss her, especially when I am sad or sick. Thanks, Ginny, for your words and hope that you feel better.

  2. Oh my goodness! You just reminded me of that little song…Bye..O..Baby..Bunting! My Mama used to sing that to the grandkids. I’m sure she sung to me but unfortunately I can’t remember that far back. When I feel like you’re feeling I always fix warm water with salt & gargle….works every time. I hope you’re not getting that dreadful flu.

  4. Be all better soon! Took my soon to be 96 yr old Mom out yesterday – pushed the wheelchair thru Target, Marshall’s and Goodwill – both tuckered out but we had quality browsing time together!

  5. The older I get, it seems, the more I want my mom when I’m sick. She lives across the country—but showed up to surprise me the day before I had my gall bladder out a couple of years ago.
I thought that was unnecessary, until I woke up in the recovery room. My first words on waking were “I want my mom”
Oh! What a blessing to wake again shortly to find her sitting there holding my hand.

  6. I just lost my Mom on March 5. I really miss her. Her potato soup was the cure-all for me. Hope you feel better soon.
