“Marshmallow Harvest”

The other day, someone asked where the name “Marshmallow Ranch” came from. It’s been a year since I started this page so I’ll tell the story again.

My children are close to 16 years apart. No, it’s not a typo…that’s a 1 and a 6! It’s not that we planned to wait so long but this and that came up and finally, when the baby factory was about to close for good, we decided we’d better do this. Her big sister stayed at the local community college so her baby sister would know who she was.

While big sister was in her first year of college, she met the man she would marry a couple of years later. Being the old fashioned girl at heart, we took the fine young man back to WV to meet the grandmas. It was a good experience all the way around. One afternoon, we took a drive out from the farm and came across this field. Back home, they bale the hay in rounds, but they wrap it in white plastic to protect it from the rain. When we came around the bend, my then 4 year old gasped and pointed at the huge white bales, wondering what they were. Ever prepared to tease her little sister, the older said, “This is a Marshmallow Ranch! They grow them big like this and then when they harvest them, they are cut into little marshmallows, packaged, and shipped to the stores!” Little was awestruck. I made bigger tell the truth. From that day on, whenever we travel that stretch of road, or see the photos, we all yell, “Look! It’s Marshmallow Ranch!”

When I was looking for a name for my studio and business, I came across this photo and decided folks would be hard pressed to forget a name like that! It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since I built my website and started selling my jewelry online. I still promote my jewelry here, and there is a link up there under the cover photo that will take you to my Etsy shop. Since losing Mr. Virgo last March, the page has morphed into a blog chronicling my grief journey and documenting my travels with my little trailer, TOW-Wanda. It has been a healing, harrowing, fun, funny, spiritual, journey of self discovery and I am so honored to have you here with me!
