Looking Forward, Looking Back

Mr. FixIt and I went to town yesterday afternoon and had our Moderna booster shot. I didn’t realize till later that the booster for Moderna is a half shot. Some are questioning that…why only half? Will that keep me covered? Maybe I should get one of the others that’s a full dose? I considered all of these responses last night and came to a conclusion. I trusted science enough to tell me there is a covid vaccine and it is safe, that you still may get covid but it’s very likely not going to kill you, and the protection the vaccine affords you outweighs the small risk of a negative reaction.

Medicine is not an absolute science. Heck, it turns out not even physics is absolute. However, as we learn more, we grow with the knowledge, and we adapt to the changing information as it comes in. If the research has shown a half dose of Moderna offers adequate stimulus to the immune system to protect you…I trust that. If the information changes and they learn we need to take another booster sometime down the road…I trust that. The flu shot changes every year as the likely virus strain to come is projected. I trust that. Not blindly, but because the sheer amount of schooling and training these doctors, researchers, and scientists go through FAR outweighs my trust over what’s found in Facebook posts and conspiracy theories. I was married to a doctor for twenty years. I know exactly what they go through to learn and continue learning throughout their entire careers.

So, we got our boosters. (The dog was on a poster behind me. Looks pretty real, huh?) As I am writing this, my arm is a little sore. Small price to pay for increased protection. Will I continue wearing a mask in public places? Yes. Will I social distance? Yes. Will I practice good hand hygiene and not touch my face? Yes and Yes. Some will ask…What are you afraid of? Nothing…I’m being proactive and informed. If you’re going to continue doing all this stuff, why even bother having the vaccine? Because, I believe in science and I believe in vaccines. I have a little scar on my left upper arm that shows how smallpox was eradicated. I’ve had more vaccines than I can count. I remember when I had to fly military transport to come back to the States from England and I had to get about five or six hefty vaccines to do so. Holy cats…that was brutal. This is a walk in the park even if there’s just a chance of keeping me from being intubated and dying alone in an ICU somewhere.

You can sign up for the Covid-19 vaccine online at vaccines.gov and follow the directions. I understand the boosters are not available everywhere, but keep checking. And, if you haven’t had the initial series, please consider doing so. The massive amount of data gathered since the first shot went in an arm shows safety and efficacy. I know…it’s a personal choice. I appreciate that. I just pray for your wellness and love that you are here.

Now, for something on a lighter note. A friend of mine shared a link to a trip down memory lane. Remember the Sears Wishbooks and the Montgomery Ward and JCPenney holiday catalogs? Well, someone has digitized them and you can pull up a year from your childhood and look at the toys you were drooling over that season! How fun is that? So, here ya go…enjoy!!!

247 Vintage Christmas Wish Books and Retail Department Store Catalogs, featuring 209,424 catalog pages from Sears, Montgomery Ward and JCPenney over the years.
