Life in Miniature

Babies are the best, aren’t they? I’ve only knitted a few baby things in my life…mainly because I lacked the confidence to follow intricate patterns. But, once I started making socks, my friend Gail (knitter extraordinaire) assured me I could do anything! I finished knitting the little baby sweater yesterday morning. I had enough yarn to make a pair of baby socks. I wasn’t sure if I had enough to make a hat as well, so I started with the socks first.

I’ve been knitting adult socks for several years now using various patterns and methods. I searched for a baby bootie or sock pattern I liked and ended up starting and tearing out at least three socks. That kind of day is frustrating and it would be very easy to just put it all away and do something else. But I have a project that I’m looking forward to starting and there are a few yarns I want to use up before I settle in on it.

I have to say, this little tiny sock for a little tiny human is the sweetest thing. It took me all day but I finally got one finished. I mean, once I finally got the right pattern it was smooth sailing, but up to that point I knitted a lot and didn’t have anything to show for it. I still need to buy little buttons for the sweater. At this point, our new little great grandson is already too big for this one, so I’ll put it away for the future. Someone will have a baby one of these days!

Our weather will start getting warm again for a few days. We will see temperatures up in the 70’s! It’s time to start cleaning out the big building and getting our lives organized while we still have the physical capabilities to do so. The birds have been emptying our feeders two or three times a week. When I woke up, I heard a woodpecker outside our bedroom window, but I couldn’t remember which kind. It turned out to be a Red-bellied Woodpecker which is an odd name because their bellies are white. They’re really pretty with a bright red head.

I made Baked Steak (a traditional staple around these parts), Buttered Noodles, and home-canned Green Beans for supper. The news continues to be distressing and I needed comfort food.. I find comfort in my faith and knowing God has us in His hands. Reading Heather Cox Richardson’s daily Letter to America helps keep the “news noise” down to a dull roar.

I keep praying for the courageous people of Ukraine and for those Russians who are caught in the crossfire and who are against what is happening. What happens to one of us, happens to all of us. We are one species…human.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load.”

Galatians 6:2-5 ESV
