I went to a frame shop many years ago to have one of my pieces framed. I’m always hesitant when I do that because it seems a bit vain to me to frame something that many would not consider “art”. I asked the framer at what point you are considered an “artist”. She said when other artists recognize you as one. I was crestfallen. My artistic endeavors, while valiant, are sure to fall short of such a lofty goal.

I was relating this story once and my high school friend, Marion (whom I consider an accomplished artist) called me on the carpet. She said “You are an artist when you order business cards with your name and “Artist” underneath it. She’s right, of course. But I always feel like maybe I’m cheating a little. I didn’t get a degree in art. I didn’t take lessons. I didn’t “pay my dues”. After all, I wouldn’t call myself a doctor or a lawyer without going to medical or law school so how could I claim to be something I didn’t study for? I’m not putting letters behind my name. I’m expressing my identity. I create artistically…whether it’s via pastels or antique silverware jewelry or the written word. Besides, no one has to justify who they are.

Live boldly and tell the world who you are.
