It’s That Time of Year!

Mr. FixIt and I went to town yesterday. We had a lot of errands to run. While we were in Sam’s, an announcement came overhead. There was no waiting for flu shots in the pharmacy. We’ve said for the last week that we needed to get that done so no time like the present. We finished up our shopping and went for the jab.

We are “of a certain age”, so we get the high dose vaccine. I think last year was the first time I had the high dose version. And, I have to say…it did kinda kick my butt for a couple of days. My arm was sore by nightfall, but…it’s something I believe in, so I’m willing to put up with the minor inconvenience of a couple achy days.

I’ve been getting vaccinations all my life, beginning with the polio vaccine. The downside of flu vaccines is…no one, including the scientists, knows exactly what strain of influenza is going to raise its ugly head in the fall. It changes every year. That is the thing about science. It’s not finished. We are always learning more and the key is to grow with that change.

I have faith in medical research…my last job was in clinical pharmaceutical research. I have a good understanding of what goes into that. That’s why I’ve always trusted the new covid vaccine. My cousin Val said it best. “Covid is a form of SARS, and SARS vaccines have been in development for ~20 years. Basically, they tweaked a known safe vaccine for this particular variant, much the same way they tweak flu vaccines.”

I am anxiously awaiting the Covid booster. We will probably need to have boosters annually…just like the flu shots. And, I will be in the front of any line to get mine. I want my life back. I think we all do. We were thrilled when we didn’t get as much as a sniffle last winter, I am sure that is a reflection of increased hygiene, wearing masks, keeping our hands away from our faces, and social distancing. I was telling someone the other day…we will continue wearing masks and following CDC Guidelines, even after this crisis is over. It just makes good sense to be proactive and practice prevention.

Get plenty of sleep. Eat right. Stay hydrated. Exercise. Practice good hygiene. Pray or meditate. Spend time in nature. Love and be loved…it’s good for what ails ya!

  1. My hubby and I have gotten flu jabs for years, and I think it helps to keep us healthy. We have also gotten two covid jabs and the Booster, My arm was very sore for a few days from the booster, but that is all,.I’m one for wearing mask and doing all the precautions that go along with it.
    Take care, and be safe.
Many hugs and miles of smiles.
