It’s Mud Season: An Ordinary Day

Too much grey, rainy weather can make one feel blue. Or, it can bring you into a cozy place.

This is the time of year when we get a ton of rain. It makes me laugh to say that because, really…West Virginia gets TONS of rain. Period. I lived in the semi-arid climate of Colorado for forty years. I was dried up like a prune…constantly dehydrated. Then I moved back to my beloved home state and actually felt my skin soaking up the moisture.

We have a boat load of moisture here, that’s for sure. And it comes in bands. If you look at the radar on the majority of days, you will see long finger-like bands of clouds sweeping across the Ohio River and deflect on a Northeasterly course. We waited out one such storm band yesterday and thought we might be able to get a walk in before the next band came through. But the sky darkened quickly and we soon recognized the heavy dense clouds of impending rain. We changed our course.

Not that I really wanted to drive to town, we decided it was our best option to keep from getting wet. We drove to the mall and got in nearly two miles for a respectable first time out for Mr. FixIt. Errands, groceries, and dinner on a Christmas gift card rounded out our day. My sweetie was sure tired when we got home but he did great!

On our way home, we experienced out first lightning of the season. I love thunder and lightning. And, I am so grateful we don’t have the kind of storms Nashville was hit with yesterday. I have friends who live there and I half held my breath till they started checking in. Please lift up prayers for all those effected by the tornado. There are buildings there that hadn’t even been fixed since the last tornado.

We watched a little TV. A little election. A little American Idol. A little reading.

It was another extraordinarily ordinary day here on The Ponderosa.

“Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.”

James 5:17 NIV

  1. those ordinary days, each a cherished momento of a life dreamed and shared, those days are the best. You know this to be true when there are no longer any left, except as memories. Life goes on but will never be ‘ordinary’ again.
