In the Middle of a Mess I Find Gratitude

Sometimes things have to get torn completely apart before they can get fixed and made whole. I’ve learned this lesson over and over and over since Mr. Virgo died. Those lessons, while hard earned, have served me well in a plethora of circumstances since. I know it’s not a big deal. I know beyond all else that this is a first world problem. Trust me…I am grateful for every single thing in my life. That being said…things are going to be in a real mess around here for the next few days.

Remember a few weeks ago when I showed you the weird mud tube that was growing up out of our new carpet in the family room? It turned out to be a termite tube. The family room used to be a garage and the floor underneath the carpet is cement. It turns out, there is a small crack in that floor and it allowed termites to tunnel in. We can’t have that! The termite guy came out that very afternoon. (I have the district team leader on speed dial since the great Flea Fiasco of 2016 out at the farm!) He scheduled someone to come out tomorrow, August 2nd and said we would need to have the carpet lifted so they can drill down into the cement to treat these nasty buggers where they live.

We scheduled the carpet dude to come out yesterday. That meant we had to move all the furniture from that end of the room so they could peel the rug back. I took a nap when we got home from Columbus on Sunday, so…I was still awake at 6:00 yesterday morning. I just got up and moved what furniture I could manage alone and left the rest for Mr. FixIt and the carpet dude. Unfortunately, the carpet padding is glued down and they can’t lift that, so hopefully they can accomplish what they need to do without tearing everything out. If that happens, we have to remove the entire carpet and install a new pad. Ugh!

Once the house is treated, the carpet dudes will return on Thursday to put everything back down. In the meantime….the entire room is an exercise in chaos. I’m not a neat freak by any stretch of the imagination. But this is a little….no, a LOT over the top. But, it’s small potatoes. You know why? Because even as we speak, there are families down in Kentucky who have suffered devastating floods and they would be thrilled to have a house that was still on its foundation. There are families in California who are running for their lives from devastating wildfires. And don’t even get me started on Ukraine.

No, this is an inconvenience. A hangnail on the thumb of life. I will not complain about any of this mundane stuff. I mean, really…it’s not like I have anything else to do to keep me occupied. I still can’t mow. We’ve had monsoon rains for a good portion of the last two weeks. I think tomorrow is shaping up to be the most promising day to get out on the tractor, but we’ll see.

Mr. FixIt had to run to town yesterday and I stayed home to work on this hat I’m knitting for Christmas. I got Bear’s extras packed up that didn’t fit in the suitcase so I can get them shipped off to Colorado. I cleaned the kitchen. And that was the extent of my accomplishments  for the day.

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

  1. I wish I could add a picture to make you feel better but I know you realize the minor inconvenience this has brought to your days. We are downsizing and moving and our house is beyond crazy but I too know others are suffering much more( not that I’m suffering at all!). As we know, God is in control and when He puts these pot holes in our journey, we pause and we listen and we learn?
