I’ll Pray for You

I’ll pray for you
“I’ll Pray for You”

How many times do we say that? Something happens to someone and we automatically say, “I’ll pray for you!” We hear of a tragedy and we say, “I’ll pray for you!” How many times do we say that…and forget to pray? Or, how about when you’re scrolling through Facebook and someone asks for prayers. We might type “Prayers!” Or “Done!” Or my personal favorite…”???” A furtive “God, please give this woman what she’s asking for.” These are good things, don’t get me wrong. But we can do so much better.

I was working one afternoon after Mr. Virgo died and I noticed one of my coworkers was tearful. She was trying to hide it at her desk and I didn’t want to intrude. I got halfway down the hall when the Holy Spirit whispered…

“Go to her…now.”

“Awwww….c’mon. I’ve got a list of phone calls that would choke a horse! I haven’t even started the pharmacy refills yet. And I need to fax those reports. I’m really busy. Someone will help her. I’ll pray for her tonight when I get home.”

“Go to her…NOW!”

“Oooooooh…you mean…NOW! Sure!”

I turned on my heel and went back to my coworker’s desk. I didn’t say anything. She didn’t look at me, but she knew I was there. Her shoulders slumped and shook with silent sobs. I placed my hand on her shoulder and she immediately leaned into me and cried harder.

I whispered. “I don’t know what you’re going through right now…and I don’t need to know. But if you want, I would love to pray with you right now. Would that be ok?”

She whispered back, “Yes! Yes, please!”

I closed the door to her office, knelt beside her and took her hand. And prayed. I prayed for God’s love to wrap around my friend and comfort her. I prayed for strength and courage in whatever she was facing. I prayed God would use whatever trial she was walking through to bring her closer to him so she would know there was someone who always loved her, always had her back.

It didn’t take long…just a couple minutes. My friend felt so much better afterwards and my work was still there, waiting for me. I felt better, too. Because, I actually did what I said I would do. By praying with my friend, I did more than placate her to make her feel better. I called on the living God…the Highest Power…to come into the situation and work on it.

I once heard of a man in our church that was going through a rough patch. His friend was talking to him on the phone. They were both on the highway but several miles apart. The man asked his friend with the troubles to pull off at the next wide spot. Soon, he caught up and there, along I-70…the man placed his hand on his friend’s shoulder, lifted his other hand to the sky, and prayed. Right there for all to see.

I don’t think you should ever miss the opportunity to pray with somebody. Of course, pray FOR them anytime. But pray WITH them whenever you can. It’s good for everyone. ❤

“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭18:20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

  1. Amen! I remember stopping in the middle of a fairground with a friend to pray for another friend’s sore leg. It is one of my ‘things’ to stop and really pray. I think Steven Curtis Chapman has a song Let Us Pray, that speaks to this. thanks for the reminder.

  2. Often when faced with a prayer request on FB I will prayer right there and then. This is so I don’t forget to pray later. If I don’t know the person I’m praying for I pray the prayer that doesn’t fail, Lord let your will be done in this persons life. I try to pray for each person who request prayer, but I’m not perfect, I forget and thankfully God forgives.

    1. PAM HANSON….THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I DO. AS I READ IT AND RESPOND I ASK GOD TO TOUCH THAT PERSONS SITUATION. SOMETIMES ITS SICKNESS, I ASK GOD TO HEAL THEM AND EASE THIER PAIN. We just had 3 in one family pass away this week. An older couple was killed in a car accident and a Brother in law to them was old and ready to go
Im still praying for that family.

  3. Absolutely! I try to never miss a chance to pray with someone. God will replace your time you spent with the time you need to complete the tasks you need to do. Thank you for listening to the Holy Spirit! God is so faithful to put us in a place where we can help others. 🙂

  4. With my husbands illness I hear this frequently. I have become so bold as to pin the person down for a specific time – I ask them to pray for him when they brush their teeth. It is something they do consistently and the action hopefully triggers a memory of our need! Keep posting!

  5. Ginny you are right about saying you will pray for someone. My cousin lost his son a few years ago and we always say you will be in our thoughts and prayers and he was. I thought about him and his family and prayed for God to give them the courage and the strength to make it through the rough times. We lost our 24 yr old daughter in sept of 2016 and I told him him if I only knew the pain he felt for losing a child I would have prayed for him that much harder. He has since passed from pancreatic cancer. He is now with his son and our Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST. i know one day me and the wife will see our daughter again. ? Thanks for all you do Brian Purpera

    1. Brian…first, my condolences for losing your daughter. I cannot imagine that pain. You are right, we
Cannot possibly fully understand another’s loss but we get closer to understanding when we suffer similar circumstances. Thank you for your kind words. These are the types of comments that lift me and keep me writing. ❤️
