Farm Living at its Best

We live on five beautiful fairly flat acres in West Virginia. To say we are “hobby farmers” is a stretch. We’re more like a sod farm that doesn’t harvest and sell our sod. We grow a few things. And, other than the cat, we have no livestock. We basically have a really large yard that we keep mowed because it brings us such joy and peace. Not only the act of mowing, which is highly therapeutic, but also the looks of the verdant green when the afternoon sun hits it just so. The air gets a bit of a golden green glow and…well, it’s just lovely. And we feel so blessed to be its stewards.

I know many of you wish I’d keep at least part of it for pollinators. I keep thinking I will…then spring comes and I’m itching to get out there on the mower for my “farmer fix”. I keep ruminating, and perhaps next year will be the change. But, for now, I’m keeping like it is. It makes me happy. And, Lord knows…there’s so much sad in the world. We all need a little more happy.

Yes today was not the lay low day of rest I was planning on. Since I’m leaving midweek for Colorado, Mr. FixIt needed me to help him with a few things he can’t do alone. We went out on the deck and put the cover over the pergola. Some of the market lights seem to have gathered moisture during the winter so I removed the covers and dried them out so we can light them. Then I went out to change the turn signal bulb in the driver’s side mirror.

I watched the YouTube video that showed exactly how to do it. I wasn’t sure I was going to be successful because it was really complicated. And, since it’s such a tiny space to reach behind, I had to use my headlamp in order to see back there. With a great dial of fiddling around and moving the mirror this way and that, I finally got it off there, removed the front cover, and replaced the bulb fixture. When I turned on the engine and flipped the turn signal, it was still making the rapid clicking which indicates a burned out bulb.

I couldn’t figure out why it would do that till I went to the back of the truck. It turns out, on the rear of the truck, there are two bulbs on each side for the turn signal…an upper and a lower. The lower was burned out. I put the light housing back in place so I could take Mr. FixIt’s truck and get a replacement bulb in the auto store in our little burg. I also ran over to my friend’s house to pick up something he had for me as a memento from my friend Diane who passed away in December.

When I got home, Mr. FixIt was adjusting the hitch a little higher for the camper. I needed to help him with that before I could work on the turn signal, but we made quick work of it and were done in no time. Then I hopped on the riding mower to finish the last of the mowing for the week. By that time, Mr. FixIt needed to get ready to go to his end of the year bowling banquet. He only substituted this year so he didn’t bowl very much, but he still loves to go to the banquet and visit with the folks…some of whom he has bowled with for over 35 years.

I finally sat down and knitted for a while in the quiet of the evening. I listened to the birds, then the thunder, and finally the rain. Another day is done. Two more sleeps and it’s time to go on a road trip!

You up for an adventure???
