Day Seven in Almost Heaven

I attempted to make homemade tortillas for breakfast yesterday. Back in the day, I used a packaged flour mix called “Masa Trigo” that you only had to add water and they made the best tortillas. However, I live in white bread America and those sorts of things are NOT available. I can find the kind to make corn tortillas, but those aren’t my favorite. I found some online, so I will give that a try because the ones I made yesterday didn’t cut it.

What I was really hankering for was a breakfast burrito. I didn’t have chorizo…I had a little bacon. I only had three eggs and no potatoes. A really good breakfast burrito has fried potatoes, eggs, cheese, and chorizo in it…wrapped in the heavenly blanket of a soft, warm, freshly made flour tortilla. What I threw on the plates of my willing family was a very poor substitute. But, as Grandma always said, “It’ll be et.” She was right…they swallowed it down somehow…bless their hearts!

I knitted for a while after breakfast then called on Little to get put together for an afternoon of “adventuring”. We stopped at a junk shop in our little town. I found two zinc canning jar lids that I’ve been looking for. I have two blue canning jars that were gifted to me and I wanted lids for them. I use them to hold things like dried beans on my kitchen counter. A few years ago, Mr. FixIt and I were wandering around the countryside and stumbled on a junk shop out in the middle of nowhere. I went in search of it and alas…the building was there, and there was still quite a bit of junk left around outside, but there was no sign of life, so we moved on.

There is a small county park about forty-five minutes away that has been designated a “dark sky” area. We brought Little there last year to see the night sky. They also have a pioneer village you can tour, but there was a cable across the road so I couldn’t get in to show it to Little. Next stop was a small country grocery store to pick up a couple things for supper, then on to see what we could get into next.

I decided to head for Harrisville, WV to stop at Berdine’s Five & Dime. Little calls it the toy store for grown up kids. I found a cool biscuit cutter and another for making donuts. Little found a rabbit’s foot keychain and a green beaded hair clip for her friend. We got some “penny candy” from the display case. I love their chocolate, but I just can’t tolerate it anymore. It always makes me sick. That’s like…sacrilegious. Of all things…chocolate??? *sigh*

By the time we finished at the Five & Dime, it was really too late to go to the big antique store and we were pretty “peopled out”. We headed home with a quick drive by the farm to see if Frank and Beans were there. They weren’t, so we continued on. We both needed to stretch out for a little rest time. Mr. FixIt was on the hunt for a mower deck he’d seen on Marketplace for our old Cub Cadet so he wasn’t home. We all pretty much fended for ourselves for supper and ended the day sitting out on the deck watching the sunset.

I reached out to the dealership and the manufacturer yesterday regarding the issues I’m having with the new camper and by the time I got home, there were three emails waiting for me. Unfortunately, it was after closing hours so I’ll call them today. I figure our day will be spent emptying out the camper and hauling it up to the dealership to have them try to find the leak and figure out what caused the running light to pop out. I’ll have to leave it with them and I imagine that’s the end of our camping escapades for this year.

The first of Little’s two week visit is over already. I knew it would fly by. I so enjoy this child.
