Day 83: Getting it all Done

Sunday is supposed to be a day of rest. During the growing season, and with all these medical appointments we have to go to, some of my “rest” gets done praying in the garden and on the tractor. We watched our church service remotely again yesterday. We are not staying away out of fear…we are staying away out of an abundance of caution. We cannot afford to let either one of us get sick and not everyone wears a mask at church. Yes, we run into the store where not everyone wears a mask, but that is not in a closed room seated for 90 minutes…social distancing or not. It’s a personal choice and we don’t feel any less Christian by worshipping at home.

Yesterday was really a busy day with mowing and planting the last of the tomato plants and watering the gardens. I brought a couple of old galvanized tubs home from the farm last week. they were split in the bottom where they froze before I had a chance to tip them over. I used the square one as a planter for three Roma Tomato plants.

I fed my sourdough starter three times this weekend in preparation for baking bread today. I also have the soybeans to make into soy milk then into tofu this afternoon. This is in addition to a medical appointment so we’re hopping.

I’m still learning about sourdough starter and how it all works. I’ve been watching YouTube videos and the starter I’ve been seeing didn’t look like mine. Mine was runny and flat. Turns out, I wasn’t feeding it enough. Now that I’ve got this down, the starter has an almost rubbery texture…like wet Silly Putty. And it smells heavenly…tangy and yeasty. And look at those bubbles! Those will produce the kind of sourdough bread you see in fine restaurants. I’ve learned a trick to making a deep golden brown crust with a lighter center. Now to see if I can make that work in my own kitchen.

I made a dozen whole wheat sourdough pancakes yesterday morning. They’ll last us through the week. Last night, I made salmon, corn on the cob, and fresh sliced tomatoes. We dined al fresco on the pool deck which was delightful. We are so happy with the shade from the pergola we built this spring. It used to be too hot out there to eat unless it was after the sun went over the far hill.

It will be a very busy week, to be sure.

““Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.” Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”

John 6:34-35 NIV
