Day 354: It’s a Matter of Engineering

Where the water meets the creek from the drain we baby!

I told you all the other day about the water coming off the road into our yard when we get really hard rains. It saturates the ground, overwhelms the French drains around the foundation of the house, and the runoff has nowhere else to go but the drain at the bottom of the back stairs. I cannot tell you how many nights we have stayed up or set our alarm for every three hours to check the basement or suck up water at the door where it comes in.

First of all, that’s a pain in the butt. Second, we are prisoners here because we cannot just up and go someplace if rain is predicted and…let’s face it…it’s West Virginia. We get a lot of rain. We called the Division of Highways and they said they would send someone out. The next morning. Mr. FixIt and I were talking over coffee and he said he didn’t think it was going to do any good since they haven’t done anything up to this point.

So, we called the Charleston office a second time the next day. I just wanted to ask when there was an engineer here in our district, because this road has an engineering issue. It wasn’t forty-five minutes till they DOH folks were here. They checked the road from every angle and agreed the road was not graded properly to begin with. They’re coming in with an initial quick fix to replace the dirt and gravel berm to keep the water from flowing down in the yard. Then they’ll come back when a grader is available and shave the road down on the far side so the water will flow into the drainage ditch where it belongs.

You know what they say…the squeaky wheel gets the grease? Well, sometimes you just have to look on a higher shelf for better quality grease, ya know what I’m sayin’? The folks here couldn’t have been nicer to us and we are so grateful we may finally be past this terrible problem!

Today is “Feel Good Friday” and I’ll tell you what…that made me feel pretty darned good!

“God will bless you, if you don’t give up when your faith is being tested. He will reward you with a glorious life, just as he rewards everyone who loves him.”
