Day 349: Heading into Mud Season

After a week of stunning springlike weather, the waterworks were scheduled to get turned on during the night. We’re supposed to get more than two inches of rain this week. When that is added to already saturated ground after the snow melted, we have flood warnings out all over the state. As a matter of fact, in an effort to be prepared, our Governor has issued a State of Readiness for all of our public services…just in case. I have to say, I have been pleasantly surprised by the actions of the Governor’s Office during the last year.

While I love those sunny spring days that make you feel like you’ve been let out of prison, I also deeply appreciate the heavy rains of spring. Especially if they are accompanied by thunderstorms. The only bad thing is, the ground has been frozen for months, and as it warms up and rain floods over saturated soil, the shallow root systems can give way and we get a lot of falling trees. This can take out the power lines, which isn’t as pleasant. Hopefully, we’ll get by and not have to run the generator.

We’ve faired well with our second dose of the Covid vaccine. Last night marked 48 hours, and my arms is only slightly sore….a little warm, red, and itchy still. Mr. FixIt says his is gone. I spoke to a friend of mine yesterday and she said she had a terrible reaction with headache, fever and nausea, but she was starting to pull out of it last night. The rest of my friends seem to have gotten through it well. We live in a rural area, and I hate to say, there are some being persuaded by faith groups to abstain from the vaccine. This saddens me.

Our parents didn’t think twice about getting us vaccinated for polio when we were kids. I never thought twice when I got my own children vaccinated. I worked in a family medicine clinic and vaccinated hundreds of little ones. We all want to get back to normal life. And it isn’t going to happen until we have herd immunity. And, the longer we wait, the more time there is for the virus to develop variants that can be even more harmful. I know the numbers are going down…that is a good thing. But, they are kind of maintaining a plateau right now, and that’s not good. I don’t want anyone else to suffer and die unnecessarily. I’m sure you don’t either. I know it’s a personal choice, but if you’re worried about how it might affect you, I’m here to say it’s not bad at all and I would encourage you to take it when your turn comes around. Let’s get this thing over with and get back to our lives!

I wanted some comfort food yesterday, so I made beef and noodles. I love when I cook enough for four meals…I can just pull one out of the freezer and pop it in my Hot Logic Mini and have a hot meal in record time. I have some apples that I don’t want to go to waste so I’m going to bake a pie today. We have a lot to do this week, so we’re making our lists and checking them twice. Every day is another day closer to surgery and feeling better!
