Day 345: “Of a Certain Age”

I’ve been playing with my hair…trying to dress up a plain old ponytail or bun with a fun hair wrap. The color isn’t quite right on this one. I ordered a lighter one with more curls. We’ll see if it works better. I was remarking to Mr. FixIt yesterday…I cannot believe how grey my hair has gotten in the last five years. But I still have a streak of my former color in my bangs on one side that goes back a ways on top.

Yeah…I’m there. I’m at that age where, as my good friend Diane says, you can sneeze and be laid up in bed for three days. I’m THAT kind of old. Monday morning I woke up with the worst sore throat. But it wasn’t like “sick” sore. It felt more like whiplash. I started the inventory. Did I fall or make any sudden movements? Was I getting sick? Is this what happens with Covid? Could it have something to do with the tumor I’m having removed in a couple of weeks? Who knows?

When I woke up yesterday, it felt much better. Then I remembered…on Sunday, I woke up, turned my head to took out the window and yawned. I felt a spasm in my throat and I immediately stretched it out. But that’s the only thing I could think of to cause that soreness in my neck. I’m just grateful I am not getting sick…I have too much to do!

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous here on the Ponderosa. The sun was shining and the temperature got up to 54 degrees! Wahoooooo!!! I stood outside and turned my face to the sun for some much needed solar therapy. After lunch, Mr. FixIt asked if I was ready to help him with a project. We needed to run the snake down the back drain to make sure it’s running clear because we are getting big time rain this weekend. And, we want to make sure the drain is open while we are away. I have a monitor down in the basement by the back door that detects when the floor gets wet. I’d hate to be in Florida and get that alert!

There are some things Mr. FixIt can’t do after his strokes and since I can, and I absolutely don’t mind getting my hands dirty, I changed into my work clothes and headed to the basement. We have this thing down to a science now. I wear rubberized gloves for protection and he keeps a can of 3-in-1 oil handy to keep the cable running smoothly between my hands. I get outside the door and sit on an overturned bucket and run the foot pedal for stop and go. He shifts the mechanism from forward to reverse on my command.

We got the snake down as far as we could with the big blades then switched to the smaller ones to fine tune the tough part where the drain runs underneath the flowering quince and forsythia. If we do this every month in the spring and summer, we should keep that drain running well. When we were finished with the snake, we ran the hose down the drain with the balloon on the end to flush water through it. Then we walked down to the creek to make sure the water was flowing through the drain ok.

The creek is running really high due to all the snow melt. We carried a shovel down with us to clear out the distance from the end of the pipe to the creek. It can get filled with mud and silt from the high runoff. Now that we have that job finished, we can breathe a little easier. It’s a reminder that farm jobs are going to start picking up before we know it and those long leisurely days of relaxation are soon coming to an end.

When we finished, Mr. FixIt walked by me and said, “You did a really good job today.” It feels so good to be appreciated for your hard work and I don’t take that for granted. Neither does he. We’re a good team and work pretty well together. I have a tendency to get a little bossy because I think my way is better, but he’s a good sport and lets me think it. lol

We have errands today, and tomorrow we get our second vaccine. And…February is almost over. Amazing!

“Prepare your work outside; get everything ready for yourself in the field, and after that build your house.”
