Day 329: Sifting Through the Sands of Time

Super Bowl Sunday was decidedly different this year. We always have the whole family over and I make trays and trays of wings and finger foods. We have that great queso cheese in the slow cooker and spinach artichoke dip. Crudités and chips for dipping. This year featured me and Mr. FixIt and leftover roast chicken sandwiches. Quiet and a little lonely. I sure miss the kids, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The second dose of the covid vaccine comes soon, then I feel like we can breathe a little easier.

I spent the day nosing around Ancestry filling in the blanks on Mr. FixIt’s side of the family. It’s a little easier when I work on it while he’s in the room with me. It’s neat when I find pictures of family members that neither of us have seen. We found a lot of information about ancestors who fought in the Civil War. All the while, watching the last football game of the season.

I’m one of those fair weather fans who get into things like The Final Four and Super Bowl. Don’t ask me to sit and watch every game throughout the entire season. I just can’t do it. However, I love the excitement of the finished product. I especially enjoy the Super Bowl commercials. There were some funny ones this year. There were quite a few that were heart warming and gave all the feels. And, of course…there were several that left us looking at each other and saying, “What the heck was that all about?” I especially enjoyed the Jeep commercial with Bruce Springsteen. It’s about re-uniting and meeting in the middle…a place I sorely hope we can find again sooner rather than later.

One of the high points of my weekend was watching “Big” in her high school swim meet. She is on two teams…high school and competitive. She had high hopes to be in the Olympics this summer. It’s good to have goals, and…it’s really good when you are confident in your abilities and know when and where to focus your energy. At one point, she had to make a choice with swimming….strictly competitive or college team focused. She’s a bright girl. She’ll have academic and athletic scholarships and she’ll have a good choice of colleges. And, at the end of this month, she’ll be 17! Honest…I have no idea how she grew up so fast.

There is a girl on her team who never swam before this year. First meets are so stressful and this girl came off the block and did a belly flop. Then, she was lapped by everyone else at least twice. But she kept going no matter how long it took. I was so proud of her for not giving up. But I was even more proud that Big supported her and comforted her. She has such a big heard and is the kind of student the others look up to. You can’t ask for much more in a persona than that.

So, it’s Monday. It’s a new week. Tom Brady won another Super Bowl with Tampa Bay as a relatively “old guy”. Let’s bring the world back to center and rise up…let’s make it a great week!
