Day 210: My Word of the Day…Obstreperous!

On our way out to the farm yesterday to mow, we stopped by Charlotte’s barn with a big bag of apple peelings for the chickens. Oh…they LOVED me! I can’t remember when we went last, but the grass was SO long. And, it’s changed again. It’s gone from this rough fall grass to very fine grass that grows really fast and stays damp. Oh…it was a booger to mow! I had to go over it and over it and over it dozens of times to mulch it all up because we don’t bag it. It took forever, but when it was finished, it was so lovely. The late afternoon sun was golden as it reflected off the leaves turning the red farmhouse a deep garnet glow.

I did a load of laundry while we were there because the water and gas are free and it lets me stay at the farm longer. I started the load then went out to mow. When I came in and checked on the washer, it was humming but not moving. I fiddled with it for a bit then realized I had not turned the pump on! I ran out to the cellar house and plugged in the pump and we were back in business in no time.

The neighbor across the road called me a couple of days ago to say there was a box on the front porch and he moved it to the back to get it out of sight. It turned out to be a box from Misfits Market that was delivered to the wrong address. I took it to it’s rightful owner and hope it isn’t completely spoiled. Have any of you used Misfits? From the advertisements, it looks pretty neat. You receive a box of vegetables that may not look as pretty as the ones in the store, but they’re still perfectly useful. I’ve been thinking about checking into it. Maybe when we get back from the beach. My daughter gets a box of vegetables every week from a warehouse in Denver and loves it, but we don’t have anything like that here.

We stopped on the way home and picked up some supper and sat at the park having our weekly date night. It was a little chilly to sit on the bumper, but the leaves were still beautiful and the river was as smooth as green glass. Believe it or not, I’m not always the nicest person to be around when I’m getting read for a trip. I have my head in the clouds, thinking of a million things that need to be done. When Mr. FixIt talks to me, I don’t hear it half the time in the days leading up to vacation. This week has been a challenge with the added chores surrounding canning. When we finally sat down last night, I looked over at him and said, “It’s a darned good thing you love me because I can be a real snot.” He objected vociferously. “You are not a snot!”  I looked at him and grinned. “Ok…I’m obstreperous!”

I sat there mulling that over.

obstreperous: adjective

  1. resisting control or restraint in a difficult manner; unruly.
  2. noisy, clamorous, or boisterous

Yep…that’s me. There’s not much of anything delicate and ladylike about me, although I can clean up and be presentable in public. I wasn’t always this “free to be me”. Mr. FixIt has brought that out in me in a big way and sometimes I still feel like I need to rein it in so as not to be “too much”. For FAR too many years, I was “too much”…too loud, too boisterous, too…too…too. I stifled myself to fit a mold till I got lost down inside. Not anymore. Maybe it’s age. Maybe it’s the times. Maybe it’s Mr. FixIt embracing my every quirk. I don’t know. All I know is…now I’m obstreperous…in the very best of ways!

T-minus one day and counting. SO much to do today, I hardly know where to start…but I made a list. I can’t live without lists anymore. I’m just at that age. I tell Mr. FixIt, we have one brain between us and it’s a good thing we have each other…obstreperous or not!

  1. One of my favorite words! I loved saying it as a kid, even if I was too shy to actually be obstreperous ?
I use both Misfits and Imperfect food. Misfits has been a little inconsistent in quality, but they have always given me a refund on anything that was closer to compost than edible. Imperfect is a little pricier. I alternate weeks for them and am happy not to go to the grocery store so often. I still have my garden and support the local farmers market. (And I still miss my NY CSA ?) If you have friends who get either service, you can get a referral code from them, or you can use mine. http://imprfct.us/v/robbin_89 or use this code on Misfits COOKWME-AB0XDR.
