Day 180: So, This is What a Weekend Off Feels Like?

A cozy “faux fall” day at the Ponderosa.

I’m “retired”. I asked Mr. FixIt how we ever did all these things plus work time and a half and raise babies. He said we were a heck of a lot younger back then. True…but even two years ago, I wasn’t doing half what I’m doing now. I think part of that has been coping with Covid. Part has been the fact that I cannot eat all this Covid Comfort Food without working it off or I’m going to become unhealthy. Part has been an escape mechanism. But a very real part has been the sheer joy of celebrating life in the country with my best friend…gardening, mowing, trimming, growing, baking….aching! It just feels good, so I keep doing it.

Taking two whole days off seemed decadent after the work we’ve put in the last few months. I kept thinking there was something I should be doing…or COULD be doing. Something more productive than football. I baked that cake on Saturday. I fixed us a nice brunch yesterday after online church. It was a lovely “faux fall” day. It rained off and on all day. It stayed cool. And the fog started rolling in by 5:00. It was cozy, and just what the doctor ordered.

One of our fellow readers contacted me Saturday after reading I had wide mouth jar lids and needed regular. Her sister wanted to trade with me so I’m meeting her today…three boxes each. I only have eighteen quart and maybe eight pint jars left. I need to go out to the farm and get the food processor to make my End of the Garden Relish. I also need to shake up the vanilla extract I have steeping and check to see how the brine is coming on the dill pickles. Also, I need to pressure wash the smoker…I still haven’t gotten it cleaned since the last use.

Sunday Brunch at the Ponderosa…eggs, bacon, fried potatoes, and toast with my new plum jam. Yummmmm!

Our next big outdoor chore is putting an extension on the drain pipe out at the creek. When the big rains come, the creek washes mud, dirt, and rock up over the drain. If we extend the pipe out another ten or twelve feet, there won’t be so much to dig out next time. We’ll have to go back out to the farm in the next week and take the pole saw to some more trees. Preventive maintenance is huge when you have so many acres to care for.

I hope you enjoyed your weekend and you have a good week!
