Day 168: The Art of the Letter

I’ve been missing my Colorado peeps a lot this summer…especially now. This is when I would have been saying goodbye and driving back to West Virginia after a month of fun with the kids and my brother. Instead, I have to be satisfied with a weekly video chat with them. Don’t get me wrong…I am grateful for that connection. But, it’s not the same, you know?

Big is a junior in high school now. She’s past that awkward stage where a conversation is mostly one sided when she answers in single syllable words. Now we text back and forth easily and I love catching up with her.

Now it’s Little’s turn to be the quiet, withdrawn one. That is odd for me, because she was my chatterbox. I’ve been trying to reach her without necessarily engaging through more screen time. They get enough of that as it is. Her other grandma was a teacher and she suggested I write letters and exchange artwork with Little. So, last night I went and bought some lined paper and some colorful pens and I’ll sit down to write to her.

Writing a real handwritten letter seems so foreign these days. I have a handful of letters I’ve saved over the years…letters from my mom and my grandma. I’m hoping Little will be receptive and write back to me, but even if she doesn’t…maybe someday she too will have a small stack of letters from her Nana to go back and read.

Yesterday was quiet and peaceful, albeit hot and sticky. I worked on my webpage. I put more tomatoes in the dehydrator. We walked at the park after supper. We have a planned power outage at the house today, so we’ll probably run to town and do errands for a while. After running full speed for the last several weeks, I didn’t realize how tired I was till I stopped. It doesn’t hurt to have a few slow days.

❤️

“If you are tired from carrying heavy burdens, come to me and I will give you rest. Take the yoke I give you. Put it on your shoulders and learn from me. I am gentle and humble, and you will find rest. This yoke is easy to bear, and this burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 CEV
