Country Living Ain’t for Sissies

I can’t imagine living on an actual working farm with animals and hay fields and huge gardens. There was a time when that’s all I wanted, but I was much younger then. No, I’m grateful for the five acres we call home and even that will fall by the wayside one of these days when we need to downsize and live closer to the kids.

We’re in that stage where the grass shoots up overnight and you feel like mowing is all you do. We need to get this place and the farm squared away in the next couple of days. I didn’t go to town with Mr. FixIt yesterday. I elected to stay home and clean house. I got a lot done, but there’s still a bit more to do. When my sweetie got home yesterday, he did the weed eating in the fenced yard around the pool then started with the push mower till he just couldn’t do anymore. I went out and finished and swept the walk. Now all we need to do is the riding mower and I can knock that out in 3.5 hours. I have a system with the least number of three-point turns that shaves time off the clock.

When the mowing was finished, I made a quick supper of Buzz Buttered Steak sandwiches and chips. And I was done for the day. The temperature is supposed to be down near the mid-30’s with a possibility of frost! At least it’s not snow. I know it’s just going to be a matter of a few weeks and we’ll be complaining about the heat and humidity. But for now, I’ll be happy as a clam to have temps in the high 60’s and low 70’s. I finished going through my pile of books and projects by my chair and put things away. Just a few more things and the house will be presentable for company.

The other evening, I notice someone drove down into the yard. We live right along a dirt road and it gets really narrow just before a curve to the left. Two cars cannot pass each other so, instead of backing up 20 feet where the road is wider, folks will sometimes come off the road to let the other car pass. The people on the other side can’t move over because there’s a ditch there and the hillside just beyond. We went it and reviewed the security cameras recordings to see if we could see who did that, and while Mr. FixIt was watching, the UPS truck drove off the road just beyond the original tracks in the grass.

The UPS guys drive so fast out that road. There is a sign stating the road narrows and there is a 10mph speed limit but that doesn’t seem to deter very many people. This time, the UPS guy was driving about 40mph, came around that turn, and was face to face with another car. He slammed on his brakes, skidded on the gravel, and dipped down into the grass. You might think it wouldn’t be a problem because it’s a field. But we take great pride in keeping the place up nice. And when there are deep tracks in the grass, it makes for a really bumpy ride on the mower. Mr. FixIt called the UPS folks and they’re coming out today to assess the damages.

It’s always something out here and it keeps you hopping. I am super glad we don’t have animals and big gardens to deal with as well. We are grateful for the serenity.

“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
