Control

You’ve seen that cartoon on FB where the ’50s mom is telling her little girl that “normal” is just a setting on the dryer? Well, “control” is just a function on a keyboard. Oh, granted…there are things we can control. Our behaviors, our choices, the temperature in the car, the playlist on the iPad. But what I’m talking about is when we get in the business of trying to control everything…other people, namely.

I don’t know about you, but I try to be prepared for every possible scenario. I think I’m compensating for not being able to think fast on my feet. Just when everything is going incredibly well, one of the parties involved totally goes off and starts ad libbing. And then I join in and ad lib with them. Pretty soon, no one is following this carefully choreographed script I had in my head of how my life was going to go and where the players were going to stand.

In the past, this would have thrown me into a tizzy…relentlessly trying to get the ducks back in a row. Now I can look at it objectively and apply the Second Agreement. “Don’t take anything personally.” At least, I sure do try. It isn’t about me. It’s about them and where they are on their journey. That’s cool. I send out love and light and hope for the best for everyone. I say prayers for happiness and joy. Life is far, far too short for drama.
