Bring More Joy

We stayed in a hotel in Columbus Saturday night after getting Bear on the plane. I stayed at the gate till I was sure the flight was in the air, then we drove to a local hotel. It was near sunset by the time we were done at the airport and I didn’t want to drive all the way home in the dark. Those corn fields in Ohio are just brimming with deer who think nothing of darting out into traffic. So, we felt it was safer to just stay up there.

We ordered dinner to go and picked it up on the way to the hotel. We were both so tired, the lights were off at 10:30 and snoring soon followed. Unfortunately, neither of us slept well. The room was stuffy, it was noisy, and…well, it wasn’t our bed. Yes, we are “I-sleep-better-in-my-own-bed” years old. What can I say? It happens to the best of us.

We didn’t get up till 9:00 yesterday morning and my sweetie went down to the lobby to bring me a surprisingly good cup of coffee and a granola bar…their answer to a “Grab and Go” breakfast. Disappointing. We didn’t go to Easton Mall. We really don’t need anything and certainly don’t need anything that pricey. I mean…when the mall has a Jaguar dealership in front of it, you know you’re in the wrong place for a “deal”.

We decided to head on home. It was raining, so we knew we weren’t going to get to mow when we got there. By the time we got to Nelsonville, we were really hungry. We still don’t eat indoors. We went through the drive-thru at McD’s and they didn’t serve all day breakfast sandwiches so we moved on. I remembered that Sonic has all day breakfast items and there happened to be a restaurant just down the road.

We ordered our food and when the young man came out to deliver it, we were so taken by his genuine joie de vivre. He was conversational, interested in where we were from and what brought us to his neck of the woods. He came out two or three times to see if we needed anything else. As we were preparing to leave, I said “Jonathan…what is your position at this store?” He said, “I’m just a regular crew member, ma’am.” “Well,” I said. “I just gave you an outstanding review on the website for this Sonic. You made our little fast food meal a true delight. Thank you!”

Jonathan beamed.

It doesn’t take much to make people happy. It isn’t difficult to make the world a better place. It doesn’t take fame or fortune to lift people up and let them know they are appreciated…even if they are doing nothing but bringing you your breakfast with joy in their hearts.

Be good to people…even if they aren’t good to you. ESPECIALLY if they aren’t good to you.

Make your side of the street shine, then go across it to help your neighbor.

It’ll make both of you better people.

I am SO ready for more kindness in this world!

Let’s do this!!!

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,”

Colossians 3:12 ESV
