Boring Photos

When our grandchildren have grandchildren of their own, they’ll have entirely different photo albums than we did. Well, they probably won’t even have photo albums. They’ll have the Cloud. That ought to be fun at parties. Anyway, I saw a comedy routine the other day and the comedian was lamenting about photo albums. Our grandparents had great photo albums. If we were lucky, the names of the people in the photos were written on the back, or underneath the picture. When we said, “Who’s that, Grandma?” she’d tell us that was your great-great-grandfather when he got back from the Civil War. Or, “That’s your great aunt. She worked in the shovel plant during the war.” Worldly things. Honorable things. Great things!

Our great-grandchildren will ask about pictures and their parents will say, “That’s what Grandma had for supper on August 16, 2023.” Or, “That’s me taking a picture of myself doing fish lips.”

Fun times.

I came up to my friend Gail’s house on Tuesday because our mutual friend was driving through on a road trip. We like to take whatever opportunity we can to have a visit, however brief it is. Our friend heads on today and I may stay on another night for some extra Gail time. She fixed an amazing dinner last night….baked salmon, tiny potatoes, and fresh green beans. I made a double batch of homemade Roasted Red Pepper Hummus yesterday. I’ve always heard it’s so much better than store bought and man…they weren’t kidding. This stuff is killer. I’ll leave the recipe here for you. The only down side is it’s 190 calories for a 1/4th cup serving. I wonder if it would taste the same without all the olive oil in it?

I worked on more fall t-shirts yesterday. I think they came out nice. I continued knitting on a pair of socks I started back in February. There just aren’t enough hours in the day to do all the things! We’re going on a little “field trip” before our friend leaves. There’s a thrift shop we really love. Unfortunately, a lot of the businesses on Main Street in East Palestine, OH have closed since the train derailment and subsequent chemical disaster.

This is the first time I’ve been here since the disaster. All night long, I lay in the bed in their cottage next door and listened to trains going by…one after another…speeding through this little town that is still reeling from the consequences of dumping thousands of gallons of carcinogenic chemicals into the air, soil, and water. There are still hundreds of people displaced from their homes and living either in hotels, campers or with family or friends. You can’t drink the water. You can’t eat the vegetables from the gardens. It’s just awful.

Please keep the folks of East Palestine and so many other places who are suffering from man made disasters in your prayers. They need them!
