Biscuits, Birthdays, and Bounty

Remember when I learned how to bake biscuits like Miss Brenda Gantt? I mixed them up in a “nest” right in the flour of the biscuit bowl, then covered the bowl with a clean pillowcase to use the next time. Well, the flour sat in that bowl over the winter. I didn’t bake them as often as I thought I would. I got the bowl out yesterday to make a batch of biscuits for breakfast and they were awful! The flour was stale and had picked up flavors from cooking. And the leavening was no longer active. I was so disappointed, not only in the biscuits themselves, but in the fact that I now need to throw all that flour away. It’s such a waste. If I knew someone who had pigs, I’d send it off to them, but I don’t.

Our day was totally uneventful until late afternoon. Mr. FixIt found a rebuilt lawnmower on FB Marketplace for our rental house so we headed over there to get it before we headed to our youngest FixIt’s 18th birthday party. The place was much further out than we originally thought. It rained off and on all day yesterday and we drove out through the country just as the clouds were parting. We went out one of those typical West Virginia single lane roads up a holler to the top of a steep hill. We kept chasing the rainbows with every turn. These people had the most amazing views from their house.

We had a lovely evening with the family. Our great-grandpuppy is growing up fast and has learned more tricks. The birthday girl got lots of gifts she can use as she heads off to college in the fall as well as a dousing with Silly String. The former Mrs. FixIt brought some quail eggs to show us. The egg lady gave her a dozen when she went to pick up her egg order yesterday. They are so pretty with their brown spots. Nature’s decoration.

So, I don’t have a lot of newsy, noteworthy, deep-thinking things to talk about today. Just life in it’s infinite beauty…moments spent with people I love…doing the mundane, everyday stuff. But, isn’t this what we live for? These days of calm in a boiling sea of angst? I feel so incredibly blessed to have this life. Oh, and my truck turned over 120,000 miles last night! Thank you, God for the bounty we receive!

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

James 1:17 ESV
